Usual symptoms of a tired battery, finger hovering over the 'add to basket button' for a new one then i thought, let's just have a look at the starter motor first.
Pulled the plug caps off to give it a good crank and after a few seconds it started spinning up like a good'un.
I think holding my finger on the starter somehow freed off a peice of broken magnet that was jamming it.
10 mins to whip the starter off and I found the usual jumble of broken magnets and dust.
I have gone down the cheapo ebay route for a replacement but was wondering if anyone knows if just the outer part with the magnets in is available as a spare part anywhere. It seems to be this part that always fails. Was thinking I would rebuild the original part and keep as a spare or even re-fit it.

My 1150 is now not starting again. Dealer cleaned the starter bendix and fitted a new battery. Started OK a few times. Now won't start without a jump starter, which I've been carrying permanently on the bike.

Dealer wants to strip & clean/refurbish OE Valeo starter before suggesting buying a new OE Valeo. He reckons the new non-OE starter I had fitted myself hasn't got enough output to start the engine.

My plan is:

Re-furb current OE Valeo

or

Fit new OE Valeo

and

Fit a new Odyssey battery (as was already in the bike when I got it, and which never seemed to struggle to start)

and

Check alternator (can alternators be refurbished?)

and

Fit one of those starter booster kits from MotorWorks.

I HATE the uncertainty whether the bike will start or not. But I love my 1150 so it's worth sorting.

Frazer auto Electrics 028 9262 1911, 2 Lissue lane, just off Moira Road Lisburn can get these for about £80 ish and they can also service your old starter

These have the magnet clips in them and quality is good I fitted a few before I jacked in working at bikes

I have no interest except I have been mechanicing for about 30 odd years and these folks always helped me out

Mine did the same last summer, after fitting a new Exide 19ah battery

To save time - I just fitted a new Valeo from Motobins for about £170 (I was deliberating over a £50 one from Ebay but went OEM, as the Valeo had given 15 years good service)

I have intended to strip and investigate the old Valeo over winter but haven’t got around to it and see if it’s worth a refurbishment

Is the alternator ever a problem on 1150s?

Does the fact that my 1150 now struggles to start despite a new battery - even using a fully charged AntiGravity XP-1 - mean the issue is definitely a dodgy starter motor? 92,000km on the bike.

Or is it a certainty that the dodgy starter motor is just too resistant for even the new battery.

I might just bite the bullet and get a new starter as above - if a new one (I like the idea of that £80 version from Lisburn - thanks Doc :thumb2 ) for under £200 gives me another 90,000km it's well worth it...

OTT/unnecessary to fit this starter booster kit as well?

What’s the/is there a difference between a starter relay and a starter solenoid? Should I also have both of these replaced when replacing the starter motor?

Not trying to hijack the thread - I imagine future troubled readers might value this kind of information... :thumb2

Despite a brand new battery, my bike failed to restart one time (after an hour’s ride to a BMW dealer)
Luckily they had a jump pack and I rode it home
Did some tests with a multi meter once home and a failing bad starter was pulling a new battery down to just over 7v, whilst cranking

Old battery I took off to fit the new one is still ok a year later

Once I had fitted the new Valeo and coupled with the new Exide all is good again

Doc - you'd recommend that HC-Cargo starter over a new OE Valeo? Is that because of the cheaper price or do you reckon it's a better (stronger?) starter?

I got mine HC-Cargo from Myles Balfe in Phibsboro.

Inneresting Luke... do all HC-Cargo starters for the 1150GS come with that super-secure magnet design? Or do the boys in that place in Lisburn do something extra?

HCCargo are just the manufacturer

I use Frazers because I have been dealing with Sean and Eamon since the 80s

The Magnet clips are standard

Got it. Thanks Jay. Met you for a brief moment at HUBB 2017 in Enniskillen. :thumb2

Spoke with Michael Balfe today. He can supply three different brands of starter motor for the 1150GS, incl. HC-Cargo.

He recommended a Bosch battery rather than Odyssey, and can supply that too.

So now my never-ever-fail-to-start-ever-again-ever shopping list is:

New Bosch battery.
New HC-Cargo starter.
Motorworks hi-cap starter booster kit.

Does one also replace the starter relay / starter solenoid (are they one and the same?) when one replaces the starter?

Should I also consider replacing/refurbing the alternator?

If you can stretch to Odyssey battery, they are the best. Only a top quality battery will reliably start these bikes. Odyssey, Yuasa are 2 that work for me. Not sure about Bosch, no experience although of course respected name. Motobatt disappointing.

I have an odyssey in one of mine, works great

Forgive me if I've missed it further up the posts, but have you had the starter out and taken it to bits ie. Give it a thorough service, inc a clean and lube of the bendix?

I'd think if the magnets are attached and the grease plate covering the mirror is intact/ removed, then really there's not a lot else in there. The bendix is the bit that gets all gummed up. Brake cleaner works well to clean it. Then a careful application of oil/ grease...

If the magnets are gone, then ok, a few more options are in play. But a device is a couple of hours all in.

The exact opposite has been my experience Laurence. I may have been unlucky and got a dud Odyssey but the Motobatt has been very good so far.

Thanks.

some great info on here. I know there is a sticky regarding the starter motor but some of the links wont work for me.
Looking at the link for motorworks starter enhancement kit on this thread,it looks like a lot of money for 2 pieces of cable and some ties,or am I missing something?
Thanks for all the contributions, once again this forum has proved itself well worth the subscription.:beerjug:

From videos and photo threads, I stripped mine down and cleaned it up. One of the magnets came off probably me pulling awkwardly to get the rotor out. Easy job and now it works fine as a spare because I bought an eBay starter to keep my main transport on the road.

Any type of work you do on your motorcycle yourself through trial and error or following step-by-step instructions is in my mind a learned achievement worthy of a merit badge. Most times it is not the saving of money that satisfies but, ones aspiration to be a part of your valued motorcycle. Unless you are the type that swops bikes for the latest before old bike starts to wear.

It may be a lot of money for some wires and ties, but if it helps minimise the chance that my bike won't start, it's worth it... I hate the uncertainty whether it'll start...

I want to never be in a no-start situation again, so a new battery and a new starter and a starter booster kit will go a long way to achieve that. I'm even considering a new alternator - HC-Cargo do one for the 1150GS...
