Location
Mid wales Where roads were built for bikes
Im off on my holls in 4 weeks, Trip planned and roughly 4000 miles.
Pyranees, italy(apennie mountains) and alps.
Was wandering about tyres as i would like to do some off roading in pyraneese and alps.
Have a set of tourances and a set of tkc80's If i put a tkc on the front and a tourance on the rear, then carry the rear tkc. Will i get the milage out of the front tyre for the whole trip?????
Has anyone done this mix/match and will the bike handle ok like this???

Take the piss if you want:blast but this is a serious question:beerjug:

I did this on a set of tourances and with no mud, I had no issues.

I'd have thought you'd get the mileage out of TKC's on both wheels :nenau

It's only 1000(ish) miles to the Pyrenees.

Like Andres says, I think a new set of TKC's would do the whole trip. I don't know how much off roading you will be doing but if you are on your own, I wouldn't have thought it would be anything too extreme. If that was the case, the Tourances/Scorpion type tread would probably be suitable and would definitely last the distance. My experience of Alp/Pico's is mainly gravel tracks and I had Scorpions fitted (Ktm 990). I've just got back from the Appenines and can't recommend this place enough http://www.agriturismo.it/en/farmhouse/tuscany/massa-carrara/MontagnaVerde-9570722/index.html. It's a bit out of the way and very quiet but the accommodation and food is excellent, do half board if you go.

Just a thought but, the areas you want to go to have some of the best roads in Europe. They also have some of the biggest drop offs in the world should you get it wrong. A knobbly on the front and a road tyre on the back isn't a combination I'd want in those conditions :eek

You should get 2,500 miles out of a TKC rear even if you cane it, but you will square it off with motorway use :nenau

Tourances are fine off road provided all you will be doing is some gravel tracks in the relative dry. They just clog in mud :nenau

Whatever you pick will be a compromise, but I'd pick one or the other. If you want to do 4,000 miles on one set then Tourances are the only ones that will do it. You'll need to change a TKC rear half way through :rob

I believe you'll do the 4000 miles on new TKCs. Last year 3 of us from this parish traveled down to south Morocco, via Santander on TKCs. We thought of riding Tourances with TKCs as spares but took a chance the TKCs would last. The TKCs did last with some to spare and were surprisingly good on roads even with fully loaded 1200s. None of us are particularly hard on tyres but we were not hanging about and fully enjoyed the twistys in Morocco, and did a few gentle pistes.

This year we did a road ride down to Montenegro, over passes in the alps both ways(Stelvio and Timmeljosh), but no planned off-road, so the choice was Tourances. The Tourances were fine and somewhat better than the TCKs in cornering and stability on the motorways, but I think we could have done the 3,700 miles on TKCs and enjoyed it just as much(and the TKCs with wire wheels look the part on a 1200GS). The TKCs may also have coped better with the odd bit of gravel we encountered on the road in Slovenia.
