I need to play about with some images and overlay text. The basic photo stuff I've got only allows very basic cut and paste with no overlays. Anybody got any recommendations for free software so I don't have to go out and buy Photo Shop or something?

Cheers

Dick. you could try PhotoPlus 6.0 from Serif. I think it will do quite a lot of the things you want to do. I haven't used it myself but Serif are OK as far as I remember. The download is free but you do have to register with them before you can activate the program.

If you try it, can you let me know how you get on please.
It's always useful to have recommendations available.
I did download it to try for myself before replying to you but never wanted to get into registering with them as I don't actually need to use it myself.

I'm not sure Irfanview will do what you need. it's OK for basic resizing/cropping but not ideal for much manipulation.

You could also try The Gimp, the open source alternative to Photoshop. It'll do everything which Photoshop will do. The only thing it doesn't do properly (or so I am led to understand) is colour management for printing. For mere mortals like ourselves, that's no big deal, but if you are in publishing, that's not good enough. Apparently.

Apart from that, it'll do everything you could ever want it to do. It is available for Linux, Windows and Mac, so plenty of choice there too.

Thanks guys,I already use Irfanview but it's not sofistikated enuff for wot I need.

I've used Serif stuff before so that looks a good option as does The Gimp.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Try Photoshop Elements...

Hi Guitarman

I use Photoshop Elements (v2.0 but I think its now at v4.0 - you may even be able to get a cheap copy of v3.0) for photo editing and text overlays.
Nowhere near as expensive (or complicated) as full version but plenty of functionality including layering and text overlay.

Might be worth a look.

Cheers
