Before I take this monitor to the skip, any ideas what might be wrong with it?

(Apart from being a bit dusty and displaying Win98 desktop :D )

Top half of display is not scanning at all.

Iain, Sorry to sound like a help desk (i.e. starting from scratch...)
but as a first step, have you already plugged another monitor into the video socket to show that the problem isn't at the pc end?

Other than that what is the background to the problem? What has changed in your set-up / h/w / s/w etc. in the immediate past? And how long has it been like this? i.e. What were you doing when it happened? Be honest...

I know I know I know!!!!!!!

IT'S :GS:GS:GS:GSED!

:D :D

(Looks like there's only one half of the CRT powered up...there's a very small chance there's a dodgy connection on the back of the tube but it's 99% certain it's ferked mate......sorry)

It is definately a monitor problem, change the monitor and all is fine.

Monitor inherited from someone who replaced rather than repaired and as it's a 17" one I'm loathe to dump it.

I do have a bit of technical knowledge, have fixed everything from TV's to PC's in the past, just looking for a quick diagnosis.

I suspect the EHT transformer or a broken wire to the scan coils?

Iain

looks like it's fed up with windows 95,

and who could blame it :D

Iain

something in the scan circuit, transformer must be ok or there would be no pic at all

Far be it from me to suggest such a thing , but.......???

have you got 'new for old' house contents insurance ?
have you just 'knocked it off the table ' ?

how did you do that ? moving furniture ?

was it working fine before ?

oh well - heres a new one . :) :) :)

:) - so thats how i got in so easily :)

and heres me thinking they just liked me :D

( the 'alleged incident' may have happened - if at all - in the UK - but it wasn't me - it was my mate's mate - apparently - honest )

:)

Iain, what model Sony is it?

I have one with a defective gun, which you are welcome to for spares. Like you I tend to try and fix things, but often run out of patience and motivation before I run out of money to buy a new one.

isn't messing around inside tv's (not THAT kind) & monitors somewhat dangerous, even unplugged?

as long as you discharge any large high-voltage capacitors prior to furtling then all should be well

need to very careful when they are powered up, high voltage can jump out at you

Thanks for the offer Shugie, but it's not a Sony. No manufacturers name anywhere so I'll just open it up and take a look.

If I don't post again you'll know that I did discharge everything before touching it :yikes
