It's been.... ahem... a while since I posted on here.

I'm considering changing my trusty 1150GSA for a F700/800GS as the big girl isnt getting the sort of use it takes to justify keeping her, and as the years creep on, its not a whole lot of fun to commute on her.

Coupled with this, my young lad is looking to get some use out of his CBT and learners permit and hoping to take the test in the coming 6 months, but he cannot afford to buy or run his own wheels at the moment. So, I was contemplating a two-fold solution: get a F7/8 and allow him use it for prep and taking the full test, but it will need to be insurable as an A2 legal bike, then de-restrict it from thereon

Any thoughts before I do something I suspect I might regret....

Medical reasons made me change from the 1150 GS / GSA..
To the F series twins

My current steed is a 2017 F700GS.

They will do everything the bigger bike will do, just not in the same way..
You can't beat the big boxer engines for grunt, but in todays world of speed cameras everywhere & traffic.
The F series twin are a good alternative ( I've had 5 now )
Another thing hard to beat is the handling of a big GS, but again the little brother performs OK.
Especially if you add Hyperpro front springs ( £100 ish )
Fuel consumption is hard to beat on ant F series twin..
The motors are bullet proof & can rack up some high miles easily & trouble free.
Even with my various disabilities I can do 500 mile days on any of my 650GS / 700GS twins.
Running cost other than fuel won't bite you either.

I rate them very highly & have no hesitation in recommended them as a lighter alternative to a big GS..

Thanks.

Do you know if the F7/800 easily converted to be A2 restricted ? If so is this via mechanical means or via software? Any idea of cost or how the insurance companies treat such bikes when restricted ... I've heard that they will expect the restrictor to be removed and load the policy accordingly.
