After giving my 1200GS with only 6k on the clock a reasonable thrashing it suddenly started popping out of 5th and 6th under heavy load. Then after changing down it stuck in 2nd. Pulled over, after a minute or so it changed gear again and has been fine since.

Any ideas what the issue is? Anything to worry about (heading to the Alps in a few weeks).

Don't think so. Lever was moving. And it wouldn't really explain the popping out of gear I imagine.

Well it would if it hadn't gone properly in, because of a tight fit and failing to move freely ;)

The lever may well be moving, but if it is not enough travel to fully engage the dogs on your gears they will pop out again under torque. As stated, the linkages are prone to seizing up gradually with road crud, a cleanout and lube will probably make your shifts smooth again.

Met up with Schuck Raider this morning to pick up a back protector and did about 60 miles on the way back. pushed it hard and everything is behaving normally. Not much sign of crud or corrosion from a quick look, but I will strip and grease it all as a precaution when I get back to base. Fingers crossed it is that simple.
