I can't believe a tool is required to take the oil filler cap off!!!!!!!!!!! What do I need to remove the plastic things on top of the forks??????? What other wearied tool are required?
Aaaaaarg BMW is doing my nut :-O

I look forward to your replies, cheers guys.

Female torx for gear change and torx in general. Axle bolts? Spark plug covers?

If the oil filler annoys there are plenty of aftermarket replacements. The oem filler tool hardly fills your garage though!

A mobile phone to call BMW Assist is the most popular 'Special Tool' for 1200's apparently :thumb

If you're new to the GS's you'll need a whole bunch of Torx keys, all the way up to the bigguns.

Would recommend Cruz tools, they do a BMW specific roll which has most of the stuff you'll need to do minor jobs.

Oh- and lots of ACF50.

I think it's time that BMW Assist introduced a service to deal with piss-taking Luddite airhead and wheezy old 11**GS owners......:thumb

- 22mm tool for front forks, most of us use nuts welded together.
- several male and female Torx sockets
- special tool for spark plug cap removal - Touratech from Nippy Normans is popular
- tool for removal of oil filter - Nippy Normans have several.

for a normal servis thats about it, do a search under tool kits and all is made clear.

BEWARE.... make sure yo get the male Torz for your rear wheel removal especially if you live in the sticks as some garages don't have it so tire changing will be difficult.

What about a long thin spark plug wrench
- Must be long enough to get in the hole in the cylinder head cover and over the plug.
- Must also be relatively thin walled so it does not jam between the edge of the plug itself and the wall of the cylinder head cover.

Thank you for the (sensible) answers. I have smiled at the (Errrr), others

As with all bikes the nuts and bolt are a bit crap and as I go along I will swap them for SS. Is it possible to replace the rear wheel bolts?

I do my own servicing and bought the following (or already had) for my '08 GSA:

Spark plug coil removal tool - get the aluminium one not the plastic rubbish.

Spark Plug removal tool - long, thinned wall type - I got mine from Motorworks.

Oil Filter removal tool - I had a few already that happen to fit.

Torx bit/sockets as already mentioned - I prefer the extra long ones for easier access.

Wurth Feeler gauges for valve and rocker end float clearances - makes life easier.

Vacume gauges for throttle body Sync - I already had these.

GS911 diagnostic tool - this is optional but very handy to have.

£50 DVD repair manual - you can get these cheaper off the net I'm sure.

Brakes can be bled with a piece of pipe unless you have servo's.

I think that was all that I bought specifically. I use Motorworks generally to buy the parts and Opie Oils for the fluids. Oh, and Steptoe for brake shoes.

The alternator belt can be changed without special tools so don't buy the £85 tool from BMW - plus it's only every 24K miles. Again, got mine from Motorworks as part of a service order.
