Any one painted this panel?

After wasting time and money trying to find an aftermarket option to replace this silver (air filter?) panel to a black one, I am considering spraying it myself.

I have no idea if it’s possible, with a rattle can at home, or what the technique would be (etching primer first?). If you have done it or know what to do then I would appreciate your advice?

Years ago i sprayed the olive side panels of my 2007 R1200GSA satin black using rattle cans. The results were very good and looked the same as the factory black ones.

No sanding required the only prep was to wipe over with thinners prior to paint.

What i will say is they needed to be redone every couple of years at the paint started to shine where my knee rubbed against them.

I have done it a few weeks ago with a quality Matt black rattle can and it looks factory 👍👍 very easy to do 👌

Super, did you spray straight on to the panel or did you have to prep it (other than an alcohol wipe)? Also, can you recommend the product of paint?

I used panel wipe to make sure really clean, then sprayed with no primer. About 3 coats with around 20 mins between coats. 👍

it will be less money than you think .powder coating for what it is ,is very reasonable
I asked for a quote for the silver panels on a gs1300, these are smaller than the gsa panels an was quoted £180, my paint can was about £12 and did the gs and now also the gsa 👍

Maybe try to vinyl wrap it ?

It’s small enough to probably be quite easy and cheap, if it doesn’t work it’s completely reversible
I’d say a safer option as it can always be returned to original colour, should the owner have change of heart, or when the bike does get sold on.

I had considered that but having ‘wrapped’ a few things in the past I am not too keen on tackling these quite fiddly shaped panels. Removing paint won’t be too difficult and tbh I can’t see many people wanting them in silver.

I`ve never used it but Plastidip is supposed to give a good finish to parts such as the ones the OP is considering painting and the beauty of it is that it is supposed to be peelable so if it doesn`t work out or you have a change of mind it should be easily returned back to original.
It was all the rage a few years ago with vids`n`stuff all over the internet..

I have, twice, and the fit has been shocking both times (different sellers) - I’m done with buying off Aliexpress et al. But thanks for the suggestion. 👍🏻
i was worried about this - but i ordered a set of the "kemi moto" ones the other week for £38 inc delivery and they fit perfectly - and i mean 'perfectly'

they look great fitted - make a real difference to the bike

I actually fancied the gen BMW ones that they sell in europe - which, I understand, are available in black or silver and they are available "smooth" or with the cutouts for the bag-attachement bits - but they are also 178euros each side!
