'04 Adv (obviously twin spark).......for many weeks now, she's been running like a total dog.....to the point where I haven't been going out on her and have been caging it instead.

She's one year and 18.5k miles old, and she gets ridden through all weathers and all conditions (including fords ;) )

The fuel filter has been de-tanked and replaced, so that's clean and clear (we thought it might be water in the filter after a ford exploit  )

Remus, Y piece, no baffle and a steptoe CCP link.

Symptoms;

Lack of power, hesitation under load, missing and bad hesitation particularly bad above 4500 revs and higher gears, to the point I don't feel safe filtering over 60 or overtaking.
Top end down 15mph.

Today I replaced both sets of plugs for new NGK's, cleaned and wd'd the leads and took her out for a blast...for the first 2 mins I was whooping and shouting in glee 'cos it all felt right again, but then at the bottom of Wrotham hill after a few minutes in 'Italian tune-up' mode , I eased off to pass an accident and when I rolled the throttle back on again, the hesitation was back, albeit not as bad.

To say I was gutted is an understatement :( :( :(

So I'm thinking it's the HT leads, or the coils in the ends breaking down.......hopefully, that nice Mr Steptoe has still got the ends from his breaking Adv so I can try those, but does anyone else have any other ideas??

(It did go in for a service with this problem after it first occurred, but at t hat time the hesitation was only above 80-ish so they didn't find it and it came back the same.)

This is ruining my enjoyment...any help appreciated.

Cheers
Bill

Some of the symptoms sound similar to my snags in New England Bill. My injectors were dirty - got them cleaned out in New Jersey & it made a spectacular recovery...

Is it doing better mpg than usual? Main side effect/symptom was that the consumption improved so much that I was getting 290 before the light came on rather than 215-225...

Mike:)

Yep, still well in warranty......but taking it in involves time off and hassle, and I wanted to do the fuel filter anyway.

The plugs I wasn't worried about changing 'cos they'll be due next service anyway....if it does turn out to be the coild leads then I will be back to prestige but I had nothing to lose by trying to sort it out ;)

Mike....no, the opposite if anything, though I don't keep any records and pay little attention to my fuel economy I'm afraid.

Gut feeling is it's using more fuel.

The plugs that came out looked perfect combustion wise though (the lower ones slightly sooty if anything but otherwise fine) .

I'm hoping I can get hold of Neil tonight and arrange a quick swap of the leads at the Ace tommorrow, then that'll be ruled out.........and if not, Prestige here we come

:(

Woohooo!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Tippytoes bringing along a couple of spare HT lead coil end gadget thingies, I'm a happy bunny again!!!!

We swapped them around on the forecourt of the Ace cafe, and off I went for a blast round the north circ......

Ten mins later, I came back with a big shit-eating grin...all cured, and running as smoothly and as powerfully as ever, if not better.

On close examination, one of the coil leads has a slight bulge along a seam, and bubbling rust is starting to appear there...it looks like somehow (and I really can't imagine how ;) ) water has got into the area inbetween the rubber cap and the spark plug itself, and sat there rotting the coil lead away from inside.

So I'm off to Prestige asap to swap the two caps over under warranty so I can give Tippytoes back his ones...but thanks very much Neil, you made my day :thumb

Had a similar problem on the 1200....despite it having a brain the size of a planet the ECU didn't have any error messages.

After stripping most of the ignition off the bike (Vines), it turned out to be the coil on the secondary spark plug.....this explained why on light load / low rpm it was ok, but under load/high rpm it ran like a bastard.

Regardless of your joy at regaining full power, why does eating shit make you happy ?
