My sister is looking to have 2 new radiators fitted , she wants more output. She was given a quote of over £500 for job . So just asking if there is a plumber in the County Down area or is there someone who you can recommend to do the job . Many Thanks Geno

There is not enough information in your post to give a helpful answer. For "more output" you can do a number of things like just replacing old radiators with new high output or replacing single with double or even threble rads. That is provided the boiler has enough capacity to cope with the extra demand. There shouldn't be any need to move or replace pipe work if the new rads match the old for size. That job shouldn't cost 500 either. JJH

She told me it does include the rads and refilling the system. We did check on direct replacement but we can't find anything that fits . They all needed alterations to pipes on one end .

Don't forget £100 of that will be VAT

£83.33. If he is VAT registered.

Post lacks full information though, which rads and how much? Price varies wildly with size/quality.

£500 seems a reasonable quote to be fair though, as it includes the rads, fitting, draining/filling, potential pipework adjustment etc

How much do you think you should be paying?

What are good radiators? Any suggestions on brands to get and ones to avoid? Thankyou

Many will say they're much of a muchness....if it's just your ordinary plain rad, Barlo are the default choice. Screwfix will probably sell something similar for a few less £££'s.

If your sis wants something more deluxe, there's plenty to choose from at a price.

It's unusual not to be able to find rads the same length. The brackets usually won't do. Draining and refilling? If rads can be made to straight swap isolate both flow and return do the swap and open valves and vent. JJH

Why would it......if he is a local plumber working on his own I doubt if he is earning £85k which would require him to register for VAT.

It's not what he earns, it's based on turnover. He would only have to fit 10 replacement boilers each year to push him close to the limit. I agree there are likely to be plumbers available who are not VAT registered but getting to a annual turnover of £85k would be surprising easy.

I agree with you that £500 all in for this is a fair price. Any good self employed person who puts in a good day should look to earn at least £200 per day because as soon as you allow for van, insurance, holidays, Corgi registration etc they won't be earning a fortune.

£500 = Probably about right for someone who REALLY knows what he is doing.

The system may need repressurising and will probably need some more inhibiter adding.

Changing rads' is not a particularly difficult job but I've seen so so so many feck ups done by people who think that they know what they doing yet haven't got a clue.

Or you could just ignore me.......:)

On a side note, I very recently found my plumbers pension dated 05/04/1987 ( when I stopped being a plumber) and it gave me a yearly pot of £196.60. I contacted the headquarters in Edinburgh and have now had it reassessed. 30 years of interest has me now on a massive £530 per annum.

I'm in the money........:chickendance
