I'm heading to the tunnel tomorrow and based on the distance I'll be doing during the day, I reckon I'll need to stop and get my head down before crossing. Does anyone have any recommendations for accommodation with parking in the Arras area?

Title edited to include reference to Arras.

I always love these, “I am leaving tomorrow…..” appeals :augie :D

Before crossing? As in a hotel in the UK, before crossing to France?

Arras is 60 miles from Calais, so it’s not too ‘near’ to Calais. But, if it’s Arras you want, then the town is full of hotels. Pick on one that suits your wants:

If you want something about halfway between Calais and Arras and assuming you are going via the motorway, St Omer is always popular. I can recommend the Ibis Budget.

That then dawned on me, too. :blast

Anyway, Arras has plenty of hotels. Here’s just some that have come up on UKGSer, which might help to narrow things down:

OP, as an alternative to Arras, St Quentin (south of Arras) is often popular on this forum, the hotel Florence being a regular favourite. Like Arras, there is plenty of other hotels, too. It’s a bit further to Calais (50 miles to Arras, then the 60 to Calais) but it might suit you perhaps, especially if you wanted to do less miles the day before?

Thanks for posting the links Richard. I did try searching the forum but didnt get any results hence asking the collective. I will openly acknowledge my IT skills (distinct lack of) coupled with autistic tendencies, sausage fingers and touch screens can result in some interesting attempts at spelling and grammar. Auto correct seems to try and trip me up on a regular basis too.
I've been lurking on the forum for around 20 years so 'down with the banter' dinnae worry!

I'm doing this trip on a day to day / seeing what the day brings basis but based on the excellent info and advice I've already found and received I thought I'd try an info request on here as opposed to taking a punt on booking.com.

Once agayn, tha ks fer the ìnfo.....

I stayed here about four weeks ago. There's a car park but they have a very large gate which they shut at night. Away from city centre prying eyes but you'll need an uber to take the short journey into Arras for great eating and drinking. Perfectly pleasant enough. Breakfast is basic but the coffee is nice. Good price as well.

Thank you.

The question was a good one, not least as lots of bods chose Arras as a base for ‘Doing the war stuff’. The thread, now has Arras in the title, which should make it easier for folk to find in future searches.

:beerjug:

PS Where did you stay in the end? Which hotel? Was it any good (or bad)?

We’ve used the Ibis in Saint Omer a couple of times for the last night. Far enough away from Calais to be reasonably safe, decent secured parking, nice enough little town with decent eateries and bars.

The B&B branded hotel chain are often pretty good value, for a one or two night stop. Sometimes a bit out of town, but sometimes walkable or, as in this. case, summon up a taxi / Uber. Google map / street view / aerial view is good for getting a clue as to any hotel’s location, relative to a town or the local sewage works or main express train line.

I have actually ended up at Ypres as that was where where some of the other lads on the trip who had driven over in vans decides to stop for the night.
Having got here I wished I had stayed at Arras on my own as it was a long day in the saddle (about 830K's from morzine) in circa 35 degrees.
We are at Flanders Lodge which is a decent cheap option on the outskirts of town (busines park) with parking for bikes right outside the front of the building.
When trying to put Ypres into the old Garmin Zumo on the RT, it wouldn't recognise Ypres. Having got here I'm guessing that's because there are actually no references to Ypres at the place and it's actually called Leper.

It’s not an ‘L’ , it’s an ‘I’ so it’s Ieper.
Next stop Calllais. 😀

On the misspelling of place names….

One of my first Wapping’s Wanders, was to take a gaggle of Wanderers to France for the day, to see the battlefield of Azincourt and its small museum. It’s roughly 50 miles from Calais on the D roads; in other words about 100 miles there and back in a day. To help everyone, I made a GPX file, for bods to follow, so at least they’d have the destination.

Two of the Wanderers got lost. For some reason or another, they thought it would be better to not to tap the destination on my GPX route, but instead type in Agincourt, using the English spelling. One (very important) letter difference.

Agincourt in France, is close to Nancy. Nancy, is roughly 300 miles from Calais or, a return jounery (in a day) of 600 miles. Now, you’d might suppose that distance would start to set alarm bells ringing in our two heroes’ heads, but no….. off they set towards Nancy, via a direct route, using motorways. I think it was not until well after lunch, as they hooned ever further southwards, hurtling further and further away from Calais, that the lights in their noddles came on. Happy days.

PS The French, the last people you’d expect to mark the scene of one of history’s greatest defeats, have completed a multi-million pound remaking of the museum at Azincourt. I’ll go to see it before too long, as it’s supposed to be very good.

Though, the Franch also carefully mark the battlefield of Crécy too, another glorious defeat of France.

I stayed at Le Dome hotel in the city centre on the edge of the old (well, rebuilt after WW1) town. Nowt special, but a convenient location with courtyard parking. I don't think they locked it at night as promised though.

I have moved the posts relating to the sale of Pigglet’s vehicle, to the relevant thread
