Evening All,

i'm going to be up in the area early August for 5 days or so. Previous plans have fell through so now I have time to fill and am looking for some guidance on where to visit. I'll be staying near Ashby De La Zouch, but happy to travel out/around.

TIA

What kind of things are you interested in? Sight seeing ride, or actual visit venues?

Shugborough Hall. Chatsworth House. Lichfield, as said is a nice place. Lovely cathedral and birthplace of Dr Samuel Johnson. Home of Erasmus Darwin, Charles' grandfather.

Ashby is a great looking town and has plenty of pubs to visit and a good curry house. There is also a ruined castle to see, but costs an arm and leg to see, so probably not worth it.

Burton on Trent has the Bass Brewery museum which might be worth a visit. Calke Abby also worth a look around, if you like that sort of thing.

any is good for me! i've currently no plans for the time i am up - so a balance of riding and being a tourist is probably my fit.

Quite subjective, but I like the little market towns around the Peak District and Chesterfield. Only been a few times though 🤔

Anna's Dad went to school in Ashby Grammar - he was at school with David Attenborough. There is a fair bit of interest in Ashby itself, the castle and the back yards of some of the pubs. Have a dig about and then we can expand on that.

From Zouch as the locals call it, Rutland is very accessible, Lincolnshire Wolds a bit further with The Vale of Belvoir mid way between. All very pretty, rolling hills, lovely villages and good coffee stops, oh and the locals tend not to eat southerners, not very often at least.

3 curry houses in Ashby. The one we use at least every 2 weeks is the de la Zouch. Ashby castle has some history and is under the control of English Heritage. Reasonable choice of pubs, Wetherspoons with a better class of tramp than most - in fact it is quite decent. Some nice pubs in surrounding villages.
As said, Lichfield worth a visit, but city centre shops a bit disappointing ( but I assume you won’t be doing that).
Arboretum at Alrewas worth a visit. Free to go in but there is a car parking charge.
Burton on Trent - the centre of beer.
Twycross zoo close to Ashby.
Lets us know where you will be based, what you like to do and I’m sure all those local will help you further. If you are lost for a ride out, I’m sure there will be offers of a ride out to the Peak District to explore if you want.
