I'm taking the the boy and the SWMBO to Rye for the weekend for her birthday in a couple of weeks.

I've not been there for probably 20 years so I'm a bit out of touch.

Any recommnedations of places to go or places to eat?

We often stop in Rye on the way back from the tunnel and we've always stayed at The George - nice hotel, good food and great service (like turning up as the kitchen is closing and them still feeding us after we've checked in etc)

Dungeness - RSPB wildlife reserve, old lighthouse, RH&D light railway, cafe, nuclear power station () and big skies that make you feel you're out in the middle of nowhere... head for Camber Sands and FFS keep going!

Look out for the MoD Training Ground on the RHS as you head for Dungeness.

Sun am bike meet by the Harbour roundabout / cafe / chip shop? Then drive out to Rye Harbour itself, for another cafe, and walk out to the sea (old WW2 pill-boxes near the beach.)

Look for the WW2 "acoustic mirrors" at Greatstone, or the house which was the pumping station for "PLUTO", pumping petrol to France.

Er, I hope SWMBO likes WW2 memorabilia...

For food and scenery must go to The Pilot. Its a pub on the beach at Dungeoness.

It is also right next to the Romney Marsh steam train which wiggles its way all round the place. Always a good one for kids...
Castle at Bodiam which is real heritage and has a steam railway nearby that runs up to Tenterden nice market town.
If you fancy a walking challenge go up to fairlight which is between Rye and Hastings miles of cliff top walking.

Hope helps

Some friends of mine ran the Queen's Head until a few months ago. I believe one of them still manages it. Free house with excellent guest beers and a good cook running the kitchen.

If you pop in, do tell Marcus that Mr. Magicfingers says hello.

I have a few friends in that area. Their favoured drinking hole in Rye is what they call The Wipers http://www.yprescastleinn.co.uk/

It has a beer garden & live music on Fridays. Local produce is a speciality and it looks like they are having a Scallop Festival on 25 Feb to 3 March

Bugger - not there until 9th, but looks like an ideal Friday night. Love a bit of live music.

hastings is not to far away well worth a visit

For a fight and abuse. :blast

There's a funfair for Toad Junior (not very good anyway) and a few nice buildings in the Old Town. The beach is stones and fish & chips are rubbish as well. :barf

Don't forget that Rye and Winchelsea have their own attractions, as allies to the cinque ports, in the form of fortifications.

Coffee, cake, or even a chili con carne, is good in the bookish cafe The Apothecary. You could even head inland to the Weald villages if you want a view of the 1950's (some of them anyway) so don't forget your hat.

I hope the weathers's nice. :thumb
