My 100 GS has very tatty sidepanels, flyscreen and rear mudguard - white paint is flaking off at edges mostly, revealing lovely black plastic underneath.

Do I need to strip off all paint before repainting? Any special things you ned to do when preparing plastcis for paint, compared to metalwork?

Any special filler for deep gouges etc?

(and why tf didn't they just make these parts of out of the correct colour plastic in the first place, like every off road bike maker does?)

if DIY Look on the R S paints website, they will give tou all the tips.
you will need to strip and Key the plastics then use a high plasiciser paint to keep the new surface flexible.
You would really be better speaking to your local body shop to see if they can help you. there are a lot of cars with plastic panels and they should have the equipment to do the job properly first time. (paint is getting frightingly expensive these days!!)

I ordered a BMW aerosol kit for my 1100 side panels...paint and laquer included. Used an orinary red primer ( was red paint ) and all is still 100% OK. I'll be painting my R80g/s mono airhead side panels the same way...but buying a new white high mudguard as that is VERY flexable as you well know !!

Having seen the job the did for Crapaud on Ann's bike speak to Sycomoto.

I did various panels on my 100RT, Paint and excellent advice from RS paintsI did post pics and details of my efforts on a previous thread, In retrospect I would say that it depends on how much you have to do. If it is just a couple of side panels, I would go for the aerosol option but as soon as you get to more or bigger areas then it is not much of a saving, especially when you find you run out of paint and have to order another tin plus postage.

When I painted the plastic on my VFR I bought the colour matched paint from a body shop, and they supplies a spray can of clear Plastic tie coat which, according to the can, was the product for the job.

Seemed to work ok .

I did the plastic repair, tie and undercoats and all paint prep and then had my top coat sprayed by a professional - worked out a lot cheaper that way- you get a lot sprayed in an hour if that is all that they do.

Look for Krylon paint for plastics.

The dirt bikes guys in the US have been using them with some success.

Cheers

Thanks for tips everyone

very helpful

no one happens to have a white high mudgaurd gathering dust in their garage they want to flog? or swop for a low one?

Capitol Cycle in the US sells BMW color code paint as well as primer and clearcoat in an aresol can.

Halfords made up an spray can to the BMW paint code, and they have clear and base coats.
