Hi all, I`ve been asked to make something as Stitch (who seemingly normally makes them) can be unavailable (hopefully riding around the world) and would wish to only be interested in batch work (which is fine of course).

The item is a simple adjustable brace.

I`m after a kindly Tosser who wouldn`t mind testing one for me (GS with Vario panniers needed) - its to stop the Vario panniers `flapping in the wind` but it means you will have to be followed by a mate who can observe the panniers.

I`d do it (I have a GS and Vario panniers) but I don`t have any mates...........

Yeah, apparently - if you take a look at the thread which is on my first post you will see more about this problem.

This ISNT something I`ve made - its Sticks idea - all I have done is change the design so it doesn`t sit on the heat shield and make it out of stainless and offer it to fellow Tossers if Stick is unable to help out at the time - he prefers batch work. nonetheless it seems a great idea - to be fair I did think about it about a year ago but the telephone rang and I opened a bottle of red wine....................

this is what Stick had to say about it............

People who I have ridden with in groups have said that the panniers flexed a lot - this is why i decided to look at it, also when we go away and pack a lot of stuff so it makes the bike feel more solid (piece of mind i suppose).
With the brace on you can see how much the the flex is reduced by pushing down on the panniers -as if loaded- against without the brace. I wanted to photo the difference but was not sure how to show it best.

Hi stick, finally got round to fitting the steady bars to both bikes. Fitted perfectly 10min max, good finish matches the bike. Well made and do the job without being to obvious. Panniers now feel solid when on the bike.

Not sure of the flapping problem, BUT I do know that my topbox which is a vario expandable jobby bangs and crashes about one hell of a lot. There seems to be no adjustment and its fitted to an 08 plate F650GS twin.

Its actually loud enough to make me wonder if the bloody thing has fallen off over roughish roads and several times i have reached round to ascertain whether it still there or has been flattened by a following lorry.....

+1 to the vario top box issue , Ive one on my 1200gs and Im fed up with people telling me its moving about, the two screws that attatch the topcase carrier to the bike frame are a real pain to torque up as the heads just disintegrate when you reach a certain torque.

I'd buy one. I tried contacting the original fabricator a long while ago but heard nothing back. Instead I travelled Europe with bit of 2-b-2 cut to length, wedged in and cable-tied to indicators. It did a great job at stabilising the panniers, but lacked a little panache.

Could you also put me down for one. This has annoyed me for years when touring and not until I read your thread did I realise there is a possible solution to, at very least, reduce the wobble.
With than in mind wifee has an 800GS and when following her it looks like the topbox is mounted onto jello. At least her panniers look more secure as they sit onto a bottom bar rather than the 1200's front fix point only.

Please keep me posted if you go into production.

As we live virtualy next door to each other AND I have a GS with vario paniers, how do you fancy a little run out on Sunday morning to so you can do the check yourself ?, the forecast looks OK .

Hi mate im looking at doing a Pompey to Bilbao Ferry then to andalucia 10 day trip with fully loaded panniers within the next 10 days if you are looking at a test run , any takers , free digs when we get there just checking the weather now

Bugger me, I`d eat my own spleen to go on a `test` like that (oh, work can be such a bind at times!).

Sadly, SWMBO would castrate me in 5 seconds flat so thanks for the offer mate!

Btw - if you know of anyone wanting `batch` qty`s of these can you tell them Stick is back in circulation?

Couple of points:

Its made from stainless apart from the adjuster feet.
It does not rest on the heat shield (Sticks does and I am NO WAY saying thats a bad thing - his is brill - I am just taking into consideration a point from another Tosser!)

I`ve also changed the OEM M5x15 fasteners which attach it for M5x20 as IMHO the OEM ones don`t quite seem long enough...............

Following testing I am looking to sell them individually but if anyone is after a batch then Stick is your man!

it`s in the vendors bit as a seperate thread anyway mate but I think it`s gonna be £30-£40 but I am yet to do the number crunching because financial considerations, sometimes, can divert me from my objective and have a detrimental effect on the end product - I`ve seen soooo much stuff with cost engineered OUT rather than IN and mostly the quality always seems to suffer.

Whatever the final price I hope that it will still be something that does not reflect the true cost of the item, rather a `value` to be considered as an aside to purchasing - I truly think I would simply price myself out of the market if I didn`t base my prices on mass produced stuff.

if you buy one and its not for you just return it for a full refund, my reputation means everything to me. Or alternatively I`ll send you one and if you want to keep it then pay me.
