Latest failure to happen to my bike:
Parked in garage, left on mainstand & cleared off for a couple of days.
Return to bike.
Put key in ignition. Key won't turn. Ignition is in steering lock position, where I left it (didn't check to see if steering "locked" at the time)
Steering however will turn.
Commence major sense of humour failure at yet another technical "issue" with the bike.
Call BMW assist. - 45 minute eta
1 hour 45 mins later ish BMW assist turn up (not really bothered about that - thought 45 minutes friday morning rush hour to be a bit ambitious)
BMW assist inspects bike and can't see anything visibly wrong.
'bloke now tries to fix steering lock buy
(a) smacking steering lock area one with a mallett, quite hard, repeatedly
(b) putting handle of mallet on sterring lock then smacking handle of mallet with hammer, quite hard, repeatedly.
BMW have now presented me with an estimate for in excess of £1,000.
The bike is still under warranty. BMW are suggesting it's been "maliciously damaged" / attempted theft.
My position is that given the bike is stored during the day in secure parking underneath my office and by night in a locked garage the "attempted theft" theory is somewhere between highly improbable and nil.
However yet another technical failure in top of all the others I've suffered being made worse by the BMW assist man with the hammer & mallet is a much more believable reason for damage, in my view.
And now BMW are suggesting I part with a lot of money to repair a fault for a bike still under warrranty!
My 1200GS (serviced 100 miles ago) averages a breakdown approx. every 2,500 miles* and has had about 4 or 5 warranty repairs including new gearbox
(a) power delivery failure
(b) battery failure
(c) battery failure
(d) fuel pump failure
one or two more I can't remember
*Which is about 2.5 times better than my previous bike, a R1200GS which had more breakdowns than heather mills mccartney.
Somebody did try to break the steering lock on that one, and the damage was obvious - in contrast to the example above.
Beaking down every 2,500 miles is still very poor however.
Anybody else had a steering lock failure for no obvious reason?
Yes, I do know the powers that be in BMW UK read this site......
Constructive comments graciously accepted.....
