I am looking at getting one of these instead of the standard BMW one and just wondered what they are like quality wise etc.
Also are there any issues with stability?. They seem like a big lump to cause drag and maybe instability--- it seems strange that BMW don't offer one of this size.
Any info appreciated. Thanks:thumb2

I'd be interested in what others think and their experience, as I am also considering purchasing one of these.

Got one, no problems with instability, build quality is fine. There are a couple of threads to show how you can modify lock to accept the bmw ignition key, so they all match.

Only slight issue, due to width getting the lids open on the gsa aluminum panniers can be a bit tight.

It can take two flip up helmets with ease and still have some space around them for tops etc.

Got one...just used it for 3.5k trip to Pyrenees and back....no problem. Wouldn't have one so big if it were just me, but for the 2 of us it was fine...no probs. Prevents pannier lids from just hinging/swinging up, but not an issue.

Now got a smaller one as well for solo use.

Good quality kit.

I use one and its fine. Good quality solid to-box which is cavernous. I go away for 4 0r 5 days and don't need panniers if i pack right. Now for the down side. If your thinking of getting the panniers as well, they are fine but the pannier frames are poorly painted pieces of crap.

I have used one for lots of miles with no stability problems. Great on ferrys, two full sized lids in, overnight bag out simples! Well made and totally waterproof too. Needs a bit of wiggle to open the bmw pannier lids, but not really an issue.

Thanks for the info chaps. One of the reasons for getting one of these was to leave the panniers off-- roll bag with tent etc on the pillion seat, other stuff in the box. Sorted
I have found a box anyway, just need to pick it up.
The lock mod looks easy enough- I have re-coded a few of the BMW ones in the past so that shouldn't be too difficult.
The only slight drawback I can see is that the metal rack for the BMW box is far more durable than the standard plastic one for attaching bungee straps to.
Cheers.

My normal M.O is to use the top box to carry the stuff my wife and I need on that day of the trip plus docs and cameras etc and then the other stuff is in the panniers.

In the past I have used the Trekker 46 and later a 52 and take it off the bike into the cabin on the ferry or into hotels , the problem is that the boxes tend to end up getting a bit battered and I have been looking into the 58 litre Trekker Outback with the removeable inner bag and rig up the net arrangement inside the lid for docs etc

Triumph boxes for their 800 use givi trekker. The smaller of the two top-boxes is mounted on a plate that has some lateral 'give' in the mounts. Apparently the small box was causing a nasty vibration at speed, and this was triumph's solution. I imagine the wider box could be worse in that situation?

It's a cracking size of box, though

The Givi inner bags for the Trekker Outback 42 & 58 are fantastic bits of kit.
The are a proper "dry bag" design and are designed with tie down eyes so that they can be used as extra luggage on the bike if needed.

We have one and used it on our Mugello Catalunya trip this year.

Use it to carry my DSLR and lenses, it's great.

My girlfriend likes the back rest.

I added some carry straps for taking it in to hotels but might add this for next years trip:-

Just to add that I put some additional rubber under the box to absorbe what looked a mate saw as additional vibration (didn't feel it).

I have one to in ali, often have over 20 kilo in it, used it for 1000's of miles now no probs, have used it on different bikes, great, added a couple of strap hooks on the back corners to tie it down to back rails, or help tieing gear down on the back seat, Just wish I had in black :( to go with back aka :)

Cheers Al,
Interesting about the stability-- I wondered if thats the reason BMW don't offer a bigger Ali box. Seems strange that they don't offer one unless it purely because of the access issues with the Ali pannier lids.

I think there is speed limits to some boxes, around 120 max, (applies to panniers I think to) Also tyre pressure makes a difference to. I agree with some other comments regarding the box moving around on the plate it is attached to, but more often that is not the box fault, but the rubber mounts on the plate.

Does the larger box need the GIVI SRA 5112 aluminium mounting plate or is it fine on the slightly narrower standard plastic/resin mounting plate

I'd go for the alloy one, which do appear secondhand, especially those changing from a hexhead to an lc, although the standard one would do at push.

Have the 58. Got the aluminium rack. Looks great size wise IMO.
Excellent build quality. I re-keyed so it takes the BMW key.

Going to get a non chipped one for my keyring for convenience.
Takes a C4 large shell no prob and I would say two lge might squeeze in there.
Didn't feel any skittishness or weaving at speed.

A mate of mine mounted his to his GSA using the plastic generic plate, and it's been fine.
