Anyone an expert on MS Word Toggle Codes?

I'm merging an MS Word letter using MS Excel as a datasource.

One merged field is a date. It shows perfectly well in Excel as (say) 1st July, but by the time I have merged the letter it shows as 7th January ie it has switched to a US date format.

Is there a merge-field toggle-code fix?
