This idea has been bugging me for a while now.

I know Shaun mentioned it a while ago in another thread, but has anyone tried refridgerating a pannier (presumably the right hand one)?

It shouldn't be too difficult if you used the parts from from one of those portable mini fridges and some fancy insulating materials.

Anyone done it or got any ideas? I fancy having a cold drink when I reach the beach after a hot rideout. PB

Actually.....Vern always used to fill his pannier with ice and water and beer.......it stayed chilled all day and would be a far easier way of having a cold drink.......most supermarkets do bags of ice cubes.

I don't reckon the mini fridge thingies would be man enough...I've got a 16 can one here that barely cools things and has to be left on all the time to do much......I now bring a stack of tinnies up here straight from the 'proper' fridge and it does serve to keep them cold once they're in.

I think If I were going to attempt a refigerated pannier, I'd start by looking instead at the PC modding world...there are some neat and pretty powerful active cooling systems that could easily be modified or adapted to do a pannier, and you'd have the advantyage of them already runing at 12 volts.

(Though my desk beer fridge is that too)

Another thought is those panniers with the plastic double skinned walls that you fill with water and have a tap so you have water in the desert.......can't remember offhand who makes them but a pair of those could be put in a chest freezer the day before a ride maybe....leaving the tap open and at the top to allow the water expansion to hapen without splitting the case skins.

Naaaa, I still reckon :jester :D

Hey PB, long time no banter.... well, I did get shot of me 650, so that'll be my fault.

Was thinking about this last week. You're right about the cheap fridge.... ready built heat exchanger. For insulation, I was thinking of the multi-cell sheeting for greenhouses etc. with some expanding foam in a can to fill the gaps. If using a very curved box (like a Givi), maybe use the polystyrene sheet for lining walls with, and make a limination an incg or so thick.

The fan would obviously need a free airflow, so a hole in the side of the box with a rain hood...... chop up a small lunchbox or similar so it sits about 1/2 inch off the box surface with one open side at the bottom.

Certainly not a major project, but a wee bit of advance planning won't go amiss. :thumb

Doz from the East Mids has one of the Halfords fridges fitted into his ally pannier...I'm sure somebody will have a picture.

I'm a fridge and A/C Technician (Marine Engineer) by trade.

Trust me, you are wasting your time trying to create a proper refrigerated pannier. Those small 'refrigerated' cool boxes are not true fridges and aren't very efficient at cooling. Just pack your tins in a bag with some ice, or buy a cold one when you stop riding.

Being a cheapskate type, I bought some beach coolbags as pannier bags instead of the BWM items for my R1200GS panniers (a tenner each from Boots and a perfect fit, although the colours are a bit 'gay'). These are insulated and fully waterproof, with a top zipper. They would be idea for a few tins immersed in some ice and water, and a lot cheaper and less hassle than trying to build a refrigerated pannier. Plus if anything leaked it would be contained and wouldn't ruin the inside of your pannier.

H&BExpedition panniers. Steptoe used to have those although he never filled them with anyhing but smelly socks...

How to get cold beer two nights running when camping.

Assuming you can't buy it cold fom day to day here's whatt I do on a two night trip away. Divide the beer you're taking in half ie night one and night two. This of course assumes you can physically get two nights beer on the bike  Night ones beer needs prechilling in the fridge. Night two's beer needs freezing. This only works with cans obviously and not bottles! If kept in a cool bag and the weather isn't roasting hot I find night two beer to be perfectly cool enough. Give it a try, it works.

I think Ive posted this before, so forgive my repitationnessosity.
Put yer tinny in a wet sock, and leave in the sun for a while.
Some sort of phisics happens and the beer cools doon.

Seen this one on the telly. Whilst filling the pannier with ice and water cools beer efficiently, If you add lots of salt to the ice/water, it cools the beer faster than a frreezer does. Room temp to proper cold in 5 mins.
