anyone clever know how the ABS works ?

Anyone able to understand how the non servo abs works on a 2002 R115gs
It clonks as I pull away( dealer said it should) and I am wondering how it works is it an electric pump or engine driven device?
I just wondered how it operates, mine is ok I think its got the two warning lights on the clocks that go out when I Pull away
anyone know how it all works ??
Had mine a week so far!!!

The clunk is a self test, as your stealer says thats what they do :thumb2

Yes,
Inside the control unit is a very small man in a rocking chair, facing forwards
When you brake too hard, the rocking chair rocks forward and the small man falls out of the chair and onto a button which releases the brake.
He is instructed to get back into the rocking chair instantly, as its the only one on the whole bike, and someone else might steal it if he is out of it for even a millisecond.

The clunk you hear when pulling away, is the back of the small man's head hitting the back of the control unit as the rocking chair moves suddenly backwards.

2 motors spin up and maintain spinning once you move off

the ABS system detects when the rate of Deceleration of a wheel falls below a trace of selected minimum values on a graph whilst the brake is applied and actuates magnetic clucthes that draw a plunger on that brake circuit that the brake fluid passes thru to the calliper

the decrease in pressure by the plunger "unblocks" the wheel and once the rotational speed is above the accepted values again the electrical clutch releases

All the above happens in milliseconds, Way faster than you or I could cadence brake

Trouble is though....when it does kick in you are left with that awful feeling as you sail along with no brakes till it kicks back in again...bloody un-nerving :eek: and it doesn't feel like milliseconds either

That just gives your arse more time to grip onto the seat.

just for interest sake , any ideas on how fast the cycle is???? and has anyone had it save a 'fall down' ??
I would think it useful on a front brake lock but on the rear a quick lock shouldnt end in tears but I never had abs on a bike before

I had never felt the ABS operate in normal riding, when I came to the end of my old tyres I decided to deliberately try it to see how it felt, on a wet day I found myself an empty bit of road and had a play, most undramatic I am pleased to report, try It :thumb2

Ive got servo abs on my 1150 adv. Very occasionally, I can feel it releasing the brakes when there is no apparent reason.
Once I stopped to check if I could see anything which could have caused it to operate. Am extremely small patch of oil/diesel was found about 2" diameter.

Also,
There is a dual carriageway where I live, with these horrible, raised lines painted on the road, getting closer together as the roundabout is approached.
When braking reasonably hard on these ... even in the dry, as the wheel presumably launches off the paint strips , it activates the abs on each strip, effectively giving no braking for what feels like yards at a time.
Its a bit scary when you are freewheeling towards everybodys brake lights.

This has happened several times. Whether its the strips, or maybe small patches of oil, I dont know. I still blame the paint strips ... but what do I know ?

Is it not like on a car then where the pedal pulses? Is it worthwhile at all then??
 
I've never had any of these problems. as far as I am aware the ABS has only engaged twice. once on gravel at a junction - the bike stopped. and the other time on a wet greasy road when a car suddenly shot out of a driveway. again the bike simply stopped. without any fuss. It happened so fast that it was only afterward I realised the ABS had done its job, I guess that after riding an ABS equpped GS for 12 years I just take the thing for granted now. it certainly doesn't worry me.
 
when abs reacts it tends to over react. I've adjusted my riding style to suit my brakes. You KNOW when you have abs. Just pull REALLY REALLY hard on them on a safe quite surface and see what happens. you'll know.

My other bike lay up for a while so set out without the abs due to a low battery. had an incident and locked the back up:D ALL OK but lesson learnt:pullface
 
ABS

Simple way to try it, just put the back brake on hard on a slipery surface and feel it work.
