Just wondering if anyone is doing their own?... are they okay to do?... Do they need to be plugged in to get the new sofware etc?... just thinking about the 'fly by wire' bit.. Guess if your happy with the software you have, no reason...

Or do I keep going to the dealer :(

also.. is warranty worth keeping going???? after 4 years and 11K is it a 'Good e'n'

Has it not fallen to bits yet, corrosion everywhere, my god its not a BMW, you have an alien bike, seriously service easy to do yourself and fun and cheaper, if a software upgrade comes out, then just check it in for the software upgrade, as for the warranty, that is a question of a million answers, do we ever need warranty, answer is entirely appropriate to the risk you are willing to take, pay warranty extension, or pay new engine if something goes bad, that is entirely a personal choice, and if you have the cash.

I started doing my own after the 2 years warranty ran out. I bought a GS-911WIFI to check for any fault codes and clear the service indicator. I take my time and am very methodical, so expect it gets a better service than the dealer can deliver.

Bang on, and at least you know the bolts are torqued to spec, and if you have a few mates you can buy a GS-911 together

I've always serviced my bikes and classic cars.. so not a problem doing it.. and the bike is a keeper so I'm not that bothered about residual (I'm sure I can take my time and do a better job that the service guys truth be known as I'll grease splines etc)... Just wondering about the electrics.. reading the US sites things like 'flywheel out of line' and 'Switchgear' and general ECU type problem appear to come up.... I will get a GS911
It will also be a toy due to my other transport and time.. may be only 2-3K miles a year so the cost of warranty V the use I'll get from it ???...
We have a local indy here in Bradford.. will give hm a call make sure he's set up for the newer stuff, just in case.. Also Motorwerks just over the hill for bits...
I know on forums I'm reading the exceptions from the thousands made.. but generaly are they without problem?

Great link.. thanks.. as above :- I know on forums I'm reading the exceptions from the thousands made.. but generaly are they without problem?

If you want to virtually turn off the service indicator you need to ask the next person that resets it to set a date many years in the future and a mileage many miles away.

I’m surprised no one is offering maintenance courses. There are a few lads on here retired with years of mechanical knowledge to pass on. A great hobby job I’d have thought.

liability I guess.... the CD looks good (although with a Haynes for the spec's I'm sure it's all doable).... Just wondered it some things were a problem?.. I know on my Land Rover that works on Canbus.. If I remove say a door lock (as I have) and fit a new one.. the ECU does not see it and you have to tell it somehow its there.. same fitting the towbar!...
so if a LH switch goes belly up for some reason.. and you replace it.. (new or used) .. is there any problems?

I’ve just replaced my throttle/switches and didn’t need to use the GS-911. BTW only replaced as wanted the hotter grips that arrived mid-2014

I've done all my own except the 600 mile one (2016 model). Haven't bothered reseting service message/software updates.

Ok.. sounds like they are okay to work on and reliable enough.. just didn't want to be landed with warranty costs and service costs every year for what is a low usage toy basicaly..

looking at what's been paid out in the past... warranty and service is a min of £1200 PA ... eek

Oil brake pads tyres etc will do myself after this first service, after that any major stuff it goes to BMW as tools are more expensive for some things.

lets hope there is nothing major.. TBH, I made a lot of tools for my twin cam.. they may fit the LC?....

Why bother - each annual GS service isn't really all that much more expensive than my 5 series. Oh, actually, it is - and the 5 series is half as often at every two years!

Every-time Sea Dog speaks it costs me money , burn the witch...............

My daily drive is a Land Rover, and that isn't as expensive as the GS service... how can that be.. a lot more to do and oil volumes etc. on the LR...

Tiz a rip off.. and thats another reason I wish to do it myself :)

I’ve done my own servicing on both my cars and bikes including during the guarantee period. I do use genuine filters during the guarantee period and document what I’ve done so there can’t be any disagreements if I need to make a guarantee claim.

I like doing it, save a fortune and don’t have the hassle of taking/collecting.
