Anyone doing their own service on LC's?

I’ve done my own servicing on both my cars and bikes including during the guarantee period. I do use genuine filters during the guarantee period and document what I’ve done so there can’t be any disagreements if I need to make a guarantee claim.

I like doing it, save a fortune and don’t have the hassle of taking/collecting.

+1...

Service today 1000 kms with Oil filter and all the oils, radiator liquid and Inspection cost 240 euro, thought that was quite reasonable..............

From now on my dealer is only doing the Valve checks on my LC as I do not feel comfortable doing that bit myself

Checking the clearances is a piece of piss.

If you're not confident about making the adjustments then take it to the dealer - if adjustment is needed.

!000kms thats the first service and it cost you 240euro (£218).

Am I out of touch here. My first service r1200gs 2014 cost £70 ish if I remember correct. Some negoiate it free when buying.

So is that the going rate for a first service ?

am I right in saying the engine oil does the gear box as well?... just looking at pics of the new LC (well, new to me )... have bought a Haynes.. just awaiting delivery :)

I started doing my own after the 2 years warranty ran out. I bought a GS-911WIFI to check for any fault codes and clear the service indicator. I take my time and am very methodical, so expect it gets a better service than the dealer can deliver.

BMW dealer said to me next service is either 10,000 kms or in 1 year whatever comes first, so I take it if you do not ride more than 10,000 kms in a year you have to change oils every year, I thought 2 years was plenty, seems I am wrong..............:blast

oil does not 'go off' as such... yes it can pick up chemicals that you don't want sitting in there for years on end, but like your brake pads, its a wear part, so if you're not doing the service miles, I'd have no problem keeping it in there longer...
I had a 1200 Bandit that used to do 1500 miles a year if it was lucky... I'd put Semi-Synthetic in it that would easy last 10K miles.. so I'd change that every 3 years so well within its lifespane....
I also have a V8 that I run of mineral right now as its re-bedding after a re-build... I'll only do 1K with that before it gets changed... guess what I'm saying is if the oil life is 10K... then leaving it in with reduced annual miles to half that won't be a problem at all...

Seemed reasonable changing all fluids and oil filter etc, I already got a mega low price when I bought the bike fully loaded, must look at invoice again, and make sure they did not charge me the hours labor on fork recall :beerjug:

Running in control 96 euro

Oils filters etc 100 euros

tax 45 euros

Free, isn't it.

I think this is a good point, and certainly better for the environment than dumping barely used oil. Although I service my own bikes I have been changing the oil annually regardless of mileage.

Basically I suppose if it comes down to changing oil every year, or buying a new engine or other, new oil wins for me.

My BMW car bases it’s oil changes on mileage rather than 12 month intervals.

If you live near me I’m happy to show you how to do it. It’s very straightforward and even changing shims where needed isn’t difficult.

I think the fear of doing this is worse than the job itself

Agreed. Modern synthetic oil isn’t going to go off so unless the mileage or condition of use necessitates changing it sooner, every two years will be fine.

The cars use quite a complex algorithm based on a number of things like how the car is driven, how many cold starts etc - there’s also a hard stop of ‘time’ which is two years regardless of how the car is used of driven. It could do zero miles in two years but the car would still say it needed service.
