Wondering how good a windows 7 install is if you let it keep your files programs and settings from vista..

any down sides and was there a speed increase/decrease after install?

I did a fresh install which included formatting the disk. I saved data, favourites and outlook pst file onto memory stick.

PC seems to run faster but that could be as a result of the cleanup. Start up is much faster.

I've done a couple of Vista to Windows 7 updates, including one where there were a lot of applications, and the machine had previously been updated from XP (cough Vista UPdate??). It took overnight to complete on a quad core system with plenty of RAM, but most things worked when it was done. A few, very few, older applications were incompatible but could be frigged to run, one application for a CCTV system needed to be run in XP mode.

I find my laptop faster than it was with Vista, and it switches between apps better... Also the hibernate seems to finally work!!!

I have done the upgrade to Windows7 never like upgrading I still think the best way to go is a new install so when I get time I intend to back-up wipe the HD and start again.

I use XP on my desktop think its a 1.8GHz with 1GB memory, it runs like a dream faster than my new laptop which is 1.40GHz with 3GB of memory which is now on Windows7 previously Vista. I can’t tell a difference on the boot up speed or application opening speed between W7 and Vista. People called Vista but I never had a problem with it, still prefer XP to either Vista or Woindows7, in my opinion XP solid reliable operating system if run with all the updates.

Don’t get me wrong I prefer some of the features of Windows7 and I will be sticking with it for the laptop, I recon after I reinstall with a clean install its going to be faster. The upgrade install took a lot of space up on the HD, I noticed this when I upgraded an OS once before, upgrades seem to take more space on the HD than a clean install.

.

I had two laptops with Vista, and got a free windows 7 upgrade from Toshiba, did one using the upgrade method, and one with a clean format install as it had a load of old crap on it (wife and kids PC)
After backing up all the data, I kicked off the upgrade program whilst watching telly, and apart from a couple of interactions, it seemed to work absolutely fine. No problem at all with any of the applications and the PC starts and loads applications faster than Vista ever did.
Another advantage is the fact that those 'blah blah has encountered a problem, windows is checking for a solution' have all but disappeared. I was sceptical, but my experience is that windows 7 is way better than Vista, some handy little features like window preview, snipping tool etc. Gets my vote..:thumb2

Certainly faster to boot, and the fact that sleep mode works properly means I don't boot that often anyway.

It is faster for doing stuff, but not massively.

windows 7

Lookin to upgrade for no reason other than i need the pro version. I have a vaio fw running vista home which works fantastic, brillant laptop . The only issue i have at the moment is with firefox , so after about 5 years i am going back to internet explorer .

Just done the free Dell upgrade from Vista to Win7.

All fine, files OK but one exception.....my printer drivers need reinstalling and I've tried 3 different files from the Lexmark site and I get the same error message every time:

"<filename> is not a valid Win32 application".

Any clues?:nenau
