Wanting to sort out the illumination in an 11xx RID unit.....has anyone opened one up?

No. The mental image I have is the wiring equivilent of sawing through a ball of elastic bands: wires pinging out all over the place...

Behind that PCB and the LCD screen, I reckon there's another PCB and/or a back plate with a T5 type bulb......that's what I'm after.

This is why....photos NOT of my bike.....

6K leds in instruments:

Before, with bulbs:

I've got 6k leds for both, plus a red led for the right hand side of the tacho, like this:

But the RID illumination looks nasty next to the LED instruments.

That's the thing when you start 'improving' these things. One fix just leads to another. Still, there are more expensive hobbies out there!

Took mine apart to find that it had been leaking through the clock adjuster buttons, the PCB was corroded to hell so I cleaned it with a tooth brush and AC50, worked for a bit then gave up!
I still have it somewhere and will happily take it apart again to look but I don't think that there's anything more in there than described :nenau

Mike.

Was it a bulb in there Mike?

IIRC Bill they are soldered on LEDs. I have the same issue so I would like to know if you manage to resolve it. I think it's a pain to do though. I actually wondered whether an led strip would overpower the standard LEDs to give it a brighter look to match the clocks?

Thought this was a "Can it be fixed" thread.
My fuel and temp gauges have given up, although temp still shows two bars with 3rd flashing :blast . Clock and clock adjusters work fine along with illumination.
Don't understand why one half works and the other doesn't. Was thinking it might be worn wiring but I'm buggered if I'm taking it apart, as it's bound to do the 'ball of elastic bands' impersonation.

Saw a replacement on e-blag from a 2003 model for £75!! Likely that one will go pop after a while.

Oh! the joys of older bikes.

There's a multi pin socket/plug.....have a look at the piccy above.....(post 3)

It is worth taking that apart and giving it a good spray out with contact cleaner or similar.

The RIDs are stupid money new replacement, but there are a fair number of wreckers around you could get one from.......I have a spare that I got as part of a complete dash & instruments from Ebay that didn't cost a lot (it was under the wrong title so I snaffled it :green gri )

EDIT....
If you have HIDs fitted, try diconnecting those temporarily as well.......they run on some VERY high voltage and are known to cause problems with nearby circuits with their EMF......an LCD might be fubared by that :nenau

No extra bulbs as far as I remember but I can have a look again tomorrow night and get back.
They are dead easy to take apart / clean / re-assemble only to find that they're farked anyway

Curious about your LED's in the instruments. I fitted some red ones but those in the tacho keep on burning out. Could you let me know your source as I suspect mine are mediocre quality. Thanks.

Noope I've chucked it. Sorry.

NP......I've acquired a spare dash, so I have one to play with :beerjug:

I've got all the LEDs for the Tacho and Speedo as well.......Just waiting on a ten metre length of thin cable conduit and I'm going to start on my little project :)

Please keep us posted..

The LEDs are in, but with the sun out, it was impossible to take any pics.

I've yet to open up my spare RID but I'll get around to it, and will get pics in the dark soon :)
