Is there anyone prepared to lend us their 1200GS or 1200GSA hexhead for suspension development?

We’re building up our range of UK built shock absorbers in conjunction with Nitron Suspension, for the BMW GS range, and so far we’ve completed the BMW F800GS, the R1150GS and the R1150GS Adventure, so now we need to move onto the R1200GS and GSA.

You can see the current shocks fitted to the R1150GS and F800GS

Ideally, someone who would like to or is thinking about upgrading would be best.

Your bike will be taken ‘VERY’ good care off and will be entrusted to Nitron Suspension to work their magic.:thumb2

Obviously – you will be offered an exceptional deal on the finished shock absorbers (yes, it really will be very much worth your while):D

We do have an R1150GS or F800GS if you need a loan bike whilst we have yours.

If you're interested, please drop me a PM with a contact number so we can have a chat about it.

Welcome to borrow my 08 1200GSA, am down Hampshire way next w/end if it helps. I know Chad will take good care of it :thumb2

You are welcome to my 2010 GSA as I was thinking of new shocks as this bike is keeper. No loan bike as I just finished 2 weeks in the Alps and my ass is numb! You can have it for a month as I've got to work now to pay for the trip.

WOW! - thanks for all the offers & PM's - let me work my way through them.

To keep it fair I'll go through them in the order I received your initial contact. :thumb

Ohlins have a complete ESA system with electronics and motors for about £2500.

As far as I know Wilbers are the only suppliers of aftermarket units that use the BMW ESA. They swap the ESA equipment onto new shocks at a cost of about £1300 for a pair.

Competing could be tricky as they have all the experience.

The major thing missing is the ability to alter ride height on the move. I don't know if it's possible but such a set up would get my vote. I like the comfort of a high seat but need to be able to reach the floor in towns. On the fly ride height would solve the problem.

Maybe a secondary hydraulic ride height adjuster could be added to standard shocks on top of the ESA or none ESA units.

OK - have made the arrangements with the first owner (Time Traveller) to contact me.

Many, many thanks for all of you that contacted me or sent a PM - once the Front & Rear Shock absorbers have been finalised I'll be posting back a 'Special Deal' for UKGSers.:thumb

To answer some of the initial questions posted:

The shocks being developed are conventional shocks so if you want to upgrade the suspension on an ESA equipped bike you will lose the ESA functionality.

The shocks we are developing with Nitron are a completely new range and specifically for the Dual Sport bikes (Nitron are marketing them as the 'Adventure Series' shocks) - with billet machined bodies / larger pistons / larger rods/ etc.
The only shock absorbers available in this range and available from us at Rugged Roads are:
  • BMW F800GS (08-12)
  • BMW R1150GS
  • BMW R1150GS Adventure
  • Honda Africa Twin XRV650/XRV750 (89-92)
  • Honda Africa Twin XRV750 (93-03)
  • Yamaha XT660Z Tenere (08>)
Please ensure you check with any other retailers that they are the 'Adventure Series' shocks they are listing and quoting.

The shocks are built here in the UK, and as they are custom built for each rider, according to weights and riding style, you can specify a lowered or lengthened shock to suit your specific requirements and every shock is fully serviceable.

As we add to this range, please keep an eye out for more threads as we will be looking for the following bikes soon:

  • BMW F650GS (00-07)
  • BMW F650GS Sertao (12>)
  • BMW G650GS (09>)
  • BMW F650GS Parallel Twin (08>)
  • BMW F700GS
  • BMW F800GS Adventure (13>)
  • BMW R1100GS
  • BMW R1200GS LC (13>)
  • Triumph Tiger 800
  • Triumph Tiger 800XC
  • Triumph Tiger 1200 Explorer

Please can we have Citroen style suspension with a small hydraulic pump to charge an accumulator. BMW boxer already has a belt drive to alternator - sorted.

Benefits -
High pressure hydraulics - small brake calipers, lighter weight
Mineral based fluid - no moisture ingress at seals so no caliper seal groove corrosion.
Powered suspension - easy ride height adjustment
Gas springs need less damping so cheaper internals. Gas bottle(s) can be mounted remote from shock absorber. No metal spring - less unsprung weight.

Additional weight of equipment largely absorbed by using lighter weight parts elsewhere on the bike. Some bikes could use frame tubes for the hydraulic accumulator though prob not a boxer BMW.

Hi buddy,
I have a F650GS Dakar that you can have. i cant seem to PM so i have emailed your Rugged Roads main site directly.
I'm the guy with the dodgy heart.
Cheers
Will
