In the early stages of planning a trip to the Frankische Sweitz in Germany ( near Nuremberg). I have to meet up with my son who is coming from the Channel Islands (I am travelling from UK) and the ferry timings mean that the first night rendezvous has to be not very ambitious in distance terms. Amiens is a possible choice. However that still leaves 500 miles plus to the German location and, as we on a relaxed schedule, we were thinking about making a second stop in Luxembourg. I went there years ago and I recall it ain't that big, but potentially interesting. Anyone been recently? What the accommodation situation? All experiences gratefully received.

Luxembourg is a small country, with a small capital city..... but very often HUGE hotel bills.

Clervaux is a nice place to stay.

Especially the eastern part of the country have some nice roads, I've never stayed in a Hotel, but camped, and there are a few nices ones around. I would guess that the avg. price is around 10€ for a spot.

I've always found Luxembourg pretty cool, to be honest. I have camped in Diekirch twice, (but on the second occasion it rained so hard the airbed became a life-saving device rather than a comfort accessory!)

There are some gorgeous roads in the Ardennes hills.

The place has a lazy yet rather formal feel to it. I've only been through the capital rather than into it, but it didn't look particularly appealing.

Not sure if it's on your way, but stayed here in the summer. Nice small villiage, secure bike parking, nice main building/restaurant and very stylish rooms in the annexe approx 150M away..Can't say what the rooms in the main hotel were like.

Looks good. Any guide to prices?

I used to live there, and so I may be biased in my affection for the place! I love the capital city itself, but since most visitors there are either bankers or eurocrats on expenses, the city hotels ain't cheap.

The road on the eastern border with Germany is very picturesque, running beside the Mosel river through the vineyards.

Vianden has a wonderful castle, and cheaper hotels, as well as being in the mountains with good biking roads.

Have a good trip!

Big thanks

Many thanks for all help and suggestions. Tour now taking some shape. I calculate we may even be able to slot in a visit to the Nurburgring on the way. But we remain open to more ideas.

Down a mixture of main roads and scenic roads:

The 'ring is an easy day's ride from Calais...

Luxembourg city is an easy day's ride from Calais...

The 'ring to Luxembourg city is an easy morning's (or afternoon's) ride...

Check the opening times of the 'ring.... it is not open to the masses all day everyday....

You will need at least a couple of hours at the 'ring to make it worthwhile going...

The 'ring is north east of Luxembourg city, so go to the 'ring first....

What 'more ideas' are you after......?

Vianden great place to stop, only 1 mile from Germany so very use to the two wheel traveller, all hotels biker friendly, paid about 70euros for double room last May.

Roads superb, would strongly recommend you consider 2 nights and play on the roads around Bourschied (great castle), Wiltz & Vianden.

Best news is that the british don't know Luxembourg so they don't go there!
