Anyone from here been to Norway?

Calling Liv, Norway

Going by your previous post can you give me an idea of the time needed to cover our prososed route.

Under normal conditions, how long do you think it would take us to travel the outward bound leg of our trip, around 2700kms from Esberg north to Skibotn.....Allowing stops for fuel, food, photos, coffee breaks etc and sleep...............Is 4 days unrealistic??

Thanks

Heff

Thats putting yourselves under a lot of pressure Heff, speed limit is 80kmh max most of the way from what I remember, roads are twisty, scenery awesome at times, id say give yourselves 5 days at least, you never know what the weather will throw at you either

Thanks for that map Liv-very useful. We have 10 days max to spend over there. But as with other trips (to Scotland) we have done, nothing is set in concrete, however we definitly would like to reach the Artic Circle and take in a bit of Finland if possible on the way back. We will avoid gravel roads as this would slow us down. We are happy to ride all day and we are early risers so will make the most of daylight. We will also be camping out so will be able to head off sharpish in the morning.

Am i right in saying there would be about 12 hours of daylight at the beginning of September?

everything depends on how much time you want to spend traveling each day, when I lived in Oslo we drove to Bergen via Geilo over the top of the Hardangervidda and then down to the Vøringfossen the best waterfalls I have ever seen, then over the fjord at the Kvanndal-Kinsarvik ferry, and did it in a day no problem at all, but with stops for lunch and photos etc probably took 9 hours or so. We took two days over the return trip so we could do a bit more sight seeing.
You can do long days in the summer as there is little darkness, the further north you go the less you get, you can easily read outside at 2300+ its not called midnight sun for nothing.
Thing is if your not used to it, you end up going to bed very late and getting up early.
I would plan for no more than 300 miles a day and preferably 250 otherwise you wont have time to stop and see anything.

Make sure you try geitost/Brunost its a cheese made by boiling a mixture of milk, cream and whey carefully for several hours so that the water evaporates. The heat turns the milk sugar into caramel, thinly sliced on toast heaven, I still drive my wife mad trying to find it in London.

Hi Heff.

4 days and 2700kms is not a good plan.

-What do you want to do over here? Ride and ride, fast on main roads, perhaps find a hairpin if it is on the main road, not slow down and look around?
The main roads in the fun area (=tourist areas, like Sonefjorden, Sognefjell, Gudvangen, Voss, Vik i Sogn, Stryn, Dalsnibba, and so on, and Rv.17 in the north) are not fast roads! Expect to ride in 60km/h most of the days.

...and I have made you a little route, showing some of the must-see- roads:

I guess you get an idea how it is to travel in Norway. :)

:) Liv.

No visit to Norway is complete without going to Lofoten Island, you could spend a month there, one of the most beautiful places ive seen, been there twice on the bike

Id would add the area around Jostedalsbreen Glacier: Boyabreen, Supphellbreen and Nigardsbreen.
Jutonheimen glaciers and Rjukan
Storforsen waterfall in Sweden extends for well over 1km and could almost rate as a wonder of the world is superb, been there twice
