Just heard from St.Eptoe that mine's buggered, the input shaft bearing has eaten itself apparently, so need the whole gearbox. Looking for a low mileage one to replace it. Bike is a 2000 standard 1150gs. If you have one or know of one lease let me know. I'll be phoning the usual suspects in the morning (Sherlocks/motorworks etc)

Cheers

Sorry to hear that.

You could try 'panterg' of this forum; he has a gearbox that was rebuilt by RGM nr Preston.

He originally wanted to sell the whole engine/tranny etc as one piece, but I think he might be ready to part it out. Send him a PM :thumb2

Any pictures of the bearing eating itself?

Thanks will do.

Sorry to hear this. I've a complete box from an 1100s, which I think has many of the same internals if that's any help. Its on the shelf not doing much.

Sorry to hear that M, only consolation is - better here than in the middle of nowhere, halfway to .......................
With a son in Melbourne, I've been watching with interest your prep for your travels.

Yay. :clap

Looking at those prices, this:

was a better investment than gold. :D

The bearing has possibly damaged where it locates in the case.

I have most of the parts and could rebuild it but it's going to work out very expensive, as most gearbox parts cost an arm and a leg.
Plus when you mix old and new gearbox parts all together in the same box it's usually not a recipe for a long and trouble free life.

Not so long ago Motobins had a small number of brand spanking new ADV gearboxes they were selling for £600. Possu bought one which i fitted for him into pumpys bike.

I bought my spare about six years ago, at the time I was trying to source a second-hand box for a 80/7 and the prices were getting silly. It's not brand-new but very, very nearly and was too good a price to turn the offer down. I had intended to stick an 'E' sixth gear in it but have never got around to it.

I'm now considering floating it on ebay and using the sale to buy a yacht. :D

After my experiences with airhead gearboxes munching output shaft bearings every 25k miles, I picked up a spare for my 80GS. Then, when I got my 1150, I kept an eye out for a spare for that, which now sits in a box, wrapped up nice & snug on my workbench.

When my 11 gearbox needed rebuilding the 1150's were the most popular to find on eBay. They come up more often as there is more in circulation. Also seemed cheaper at the time so good luck...

Well Mr. Steptoe has sourced one for £525 which is £100 cheaper than any I could find, so at least I'll be mobile again sometime soon. Still, turned out to be an expensive breakdown.

Going to have to start going over the bike with a fine tooth comb to find any other things that might be going wrong. With that much invested I need to keep the bike for a good few years to get my money's worth. Not that I wasn't planning to anyway.

Start with the corroded connections on and around your alternator :D. No actually leave it to me, i'll be able to get in there easier while everything is off.
