I'm just finalising a trip to the Pyrenees. On the return leg we will be stopping off just south of Clermont Ferrand after which we head up to Paris. Rather than hitting the motorway ( via Bourgos & Orleans) for the whole way, does anyone have any alternate route (preferably garmin) that they would be willing to share? Needs to be something which we could do in @ 6 hours riding.

Thanks

Volcanos

The Volcanos are a must just north of Volvic, i went down that way following the Loire. You can ride to the top on
Puy Dome for Lunch. No Sat Nav, i always use paper Map. Enjoy your 6 hours.

Look on a map and choose one for yourself.

It's not very difficult.

Mind you, looking at the amount of 'recommend me' threads on here, perhaps for many folk it is. :augie

Problem is with some of the routes on a roadmap, they dont give you speed limits or too much detail on the terrain. So was just fishing for recommendations of roads which others had ridden. I have actually managed to plot the other 2000 miles of our route all by myself.;)

Feck me, what is the speed limit? The speed limit is the speed posted on the signs. For most non-motorway roads in France it is near enough the same as it is in the UK, 60 MPH give or take a touch. Through towns and villages? Rough rule of thumb, 30 give or take a gnat's cock. It is up to you how much notice you take of these signs and limits as you hoon your awesome steed in the direction of the white cliffs of Dover and safey.

What are the roads like? Look at the fecking map. Still not sure? Look at Google fecking street view, it will show you every fecking manhole between Aberdeen and Nice.

This is the return leg of your adventure, is it not? It's safe to assume that after plotting 2000 miles you'll know what the roads are like up to this point, no? Yes? Great, mate. You'll know what to expect, won't you.

Now employ some imagination, a bit of time with a map, avoiding the motorways and work something out that will get you from A to B in under six hours. Direct, on dull motorways it's 260 miles, or a bit under 4 hours. Motorways? You shit 'em, as Harold Shand was prone to say. So, it's awesome roads time: If you ride at a true average speed of a mile a minute, that is 360 miles. I guess you won't do that. If it's half a mile a minute, halve it. Now look at the map... How are YOU, not me, not the man next door, going to do it? Destiny lies in your hands, bruv.

I guess when you ask for advice on a Sub Forum "Travel- Tips, Advice & Information" That you may get some advice which is usefull/ helpfull and some which isnt. I have been happy to share some of my old route information in the past without asking the OP if he had checked the maps. Whats the problem:confused:

Thanks for the contributions, the route is now sorted.

No problem at all Baz.
There is nothing like a bit of local knowledge. You can know a map inside out but there is no harm getting up to the minute info.
The route along side Lake Constance looks great on a map but people that know it would never use it.Thanks JB for that tip:D

Hooray, some one who understands why I asked for advice. All well and good looking at maps, but I have planned many routes before which look good on paper/ google earth, but fail to tick the boxes when you actually ride them.
