anyone had their mainstand bend/twist

Went to put the bike on the mainstand on Fri morning,
Nearly lost it as it tried to fall away from me, but once on the stand it was level.
Got home.and couldn't get the side stand down as the main was fouling it, after a bit of fackin around managed to get it out using my hand ,
The bar that you put your foot on has bent down considerably and the stand appears to be twisted as well, which is why I think I nearly dropped it on Friday,
It's also hit the ground a few times over the weekend, made me jump.I can tell.you,
Will have a word with the.dealer to see if its covered by the extended.warranty.,
Just wondered if anyone has heard of this happening before? :nenau
 
There's been a (very) few mentions on here of the mounting bolts sheraing. Maybe one has failed and the stand has moved/twisted relative to the frame :nenau

Mine went! Just had it replaced at last service. The failure was as the OP described.
 
Mine is in for powder coating, but the pivot bobbins were quite sticky into the frame. They were greasy but quite dry so heading for a problem.

TBH the design looks no better than Yamaha's Diversion 900 which is renown for cracking on the RHS just above the cross bar. IMO, bolting on a thick bash plate looks like a good move to stiffen it up.

That was the first thing I thought of, the missus had one snap on her 06 adventure, not happened on mine.

Did they charge you or was it warranty,
If charged how much if you don't mind me asking.
 
Mine's a 2008 so was out of warranty:tears

I'll need to check the bill. I'll dig it out later.
 
one of mine was replaced under warrantee, it was found on a service, i'd not really noticed but it did feel different with the new stand fitted, with the old one the bike rocked as it was lifted onto the stand.
 
My Yamaha did that, soon enough, it sat lop-sided. Then I rolled it off the stand and Dink! The broken half had snapped off & swung onto the floor. :eek:
 
Went to the dealer tonight,
Not covered under extended warranty, they are going to see if BMW will replace as a goodwill gesture, will find out tomorrow hopefully.

Get the stand welded and fit a bash plate that bolts on solid.Then you get a stronger stand that's protected from stones.

Afterwards, only use the centre stand for when you absolutely have to.
 
@JohnnyBoxer - so you beg to differ, but thanks anyway non constructive reply. :p

If the main stands were all as strong as yours - why are so many people reporting theirs as bent/broken? If you have the magic formula please let us all in on the secret.

Buying an 1100/1150 doesn't count.

The secret - make sure you're on firm ground like concrete or tarmac (but take care on hot days as it can melt and the stand can sink into the runny tarmac)

I'd never use the centre stand on a gravel/earth surface - too much movement

Keep the stand shaft lubed and periodically (every 2-3 years, strip it down and clean off any rust and replace the 2 shaft O rings to prevent water ingress, down the shaft and making it stick)

How many have broken on 12's?

I don't recall a massive problem, none of my friends with 12's have reported broken centrestands

I never had a problem on my 12GSA, although earlier GS's seem to be 'better weighted', than the 12's

K100 and K1100 were a bit more notorious to break and fail

However you've burst onto the scene and seem to be the GS guru now, so why do you recommend against using the centrestand

6 months and 4000 miles, which is more than some on here:augie

Most of my riding friends and fellow tourists here, none of them has had a wobbly or broken centre stand over the last 6 years

So I don't think it is a major 12GS/GSA flaw, that Ben de Troy is suggesting and advising against use, unless absolutely necessary
