Hi gang - was just wondering if there was an active kayaking group on this Board - there's one on t'other site?!!!

I bought a S/H one last year - dunno why, never even sat in one before - but it seemed a good idea at the time!!

Only been out in it once, on the Taunton / Bridgwater Canal - and although I didn't capsize, I did find it almost impossible to paddle in a straight line for more than a few strokes!!

So, I'm obviously a beginner - anyone else into a little bimble - when, hopefully, I could pick up a few tips !!

There are a few clubs around, I used to go to Strode College on a sunday evening where a very nice chap used to run training courses for beginners, they teach you how to roll etc, there is also a club in Taunton by the bridge near Morrisons who practice in the river/canal although I think you have to be very brave to even consider going in that rat infested quagmire that is the canal. Also there is a club that kayak/canoe on Sutton Bingham reservoir just outside Yeovil. I have kayak although havent used it for a couple of years and used to do the Exe, the Dart and surf it in North Devon.

Thanks for that info, Oscar.

I quite agree that the canal near Morrison's doesn't look very savoury - it was lovely and clear where I went at Moorland - and nice 6in walls to make getting in easy!!

After getting a wet bum first time out, I found a dry suit on eBay which seemed a good idea - I look like the Michelin Man in it - but will hopefully stay dry next time - provided I can stand the ribbing when I put it on!!

You must dig yours out again - but not sure if I fancy really deep water in mine, as capsizing is not part of my plan - being a lifetime smoker means I ain't got too much spare breath for turning upside down!!
