Anyone know about SEO?

Search engine optimisation... does any body on here fully understand what's needed in a website build to make it most 'attractive' to Google (and I'm only interested in Google rankings)

My little company website was built about 5 years ago. When built we made no attempt to incorportate SEO. After a couple of years, and realising we were not getting 'found'. We used an SEO company who did a really good job of altering the code and layout of the site, and hey presto, we are top of the rankings for our chosen key words. Now I know a few things that were involved with the changes on site, but there is apparently a lot of work 'off-site' that also helps our rankings.

Now the reason I'm asking if there's someone on here who REALLY knows about SEO and who could build a new website for another little company but make it spot on in SEO terms.The SEO company we used are still going, but are now no longer little, and no longer cheap, and basically we can't afford them.

Start googling it and see what google say.... Or look at the code in your site and see what is happening???

This could almost be sam, but as he was quick enough to find what you were after maybe he will be quick enough to put you at the top too....

I used an online course and did it myself. Took about half a day and how you do it is:

Go to www.Alexa.com for a site audit ( cost I think 75USD)

Then go to

http://www.marketingtips.com/t.cgi/28206/
and download their course.
Alternatively you can start for free by learning a lot SEO free on their webpage.

My site is number one in google for the keywords I need and I wouldnt pay for SEO again. It is easy, think about it, who knows your business and how people find you better than you? All you need to do is to be shown all the skills to highlight it better to google.

No problem with spam, he was on the ball, maybe he will be for your site too, but I really don't think it's that hard that you can't do it yourself...

Thanks for rresponses Richie. I definately can't do it myself, as I have no idea about website building or editing. Not surprisingly, it is also an incredibly competetive field, as everyone would like their commercial site to be top of the page in Google, so it's an ever changing game.

As I understand it, it has become quite a specialist industry, and that is certainly borne out by the company we used for our other site: They've grown massively. (www.justsearching.co.uk)

it should be relatively straight forward to get it working.

• Make sure that your website has titles, descriptions and appropriate meta-tags containing your key words.
  
• Google insist that you add some magic incantation to your web page for verification. They generate it, but you have to add it to your code
  
• get yourself a sitemap file. Search for sitemap - and you'll find a tool to create one for you, then just drop it into the top directory of your website
  
• Get other people to link to your website. I don't know if the mods here mind commercial signatures, but the more separate links, the better - therefore each post counts.
  
• what about the electronic style 'yellow pages sites' - get an entry with them and that will boost your rating with google.
  
• DOn't be in a hurry as the google webcrawlers take some time to find you
  
• submit yourself to google - so the webcrawlers know you're there!
  
• get yourself onto the google webmaster tools, they help with errors, hints and tips etc

I got my website working, with little tech knowledge and at no cost. It runs from my mac, and all is hunky dory. It comes up for the search strings relevant to my club and seems to work quite nicely. If I can do it then I'm sure that you can.

Thanks Thauma, for that helpful reply. The trouble is, some sectors are incredibly competetive. Just look at any commercial sector: Mobile phone sellers; music sellers; kitchen sellers; petfood sellers; electrical suppliers. In fact anything you can think of will produce probably millions of results. So.... if you assume that several thousand are doing the things you say to their sites... it's still a real skill to get on the first page of Google.

Now I know I can get on the first page if I put for example 'mobile phone seller acacia avenue, burton on trent.' (just made that up to explain my point) But if a 'Googler' knew that detail, then he wouldn't really need Google.

However, if I wanted to be on the first page on a search of simply 'mobile phone retailers' then I've got to be in the top ten best optimised sites in a massively competetive sector. (I'm not talking about Google adwords where of course I can pay to get myself on the first page in 'sponsored ads'

I'm nothing to do with mobile phones, but the point is the same. Everyone with a commercial website is trying to get to the top of Google, and it's hard to keep ahead of the rest.

If it was small scale and specific, then it is easier and my suggestions would help, but I agree that for the wider searches you need to be more specialised, (and I'm definitely not that, although SWMBO may suggest that I am 'special')
