I have been riding for a few years now and know how to do basic stuff like checking the chain etc (acknowledged that isnt much use on a shaft driven bike) but would like to learn more about bike mechanics. Is it just a case of buying a Haynes manual and figuring it out or is there anywhere I could get trained?

I did an evening class at a local (well, 50 miles away) college. Pretty cheap and fun, we hacked away at little 125s and did stuff like stripping brakes, removing forks, changing the clutch etc.

Depends how much you want to do, you'll see the day release stuff for new mechanics wanting to join the trade, but the out of hours engineering courses are easier going - I always fancied learning a bit of welding :)

Roynie and I did one of BMW's first (if not, the first) Adventure Maintenance courses in Wales, which we both found was a great hands-on introduction to the sort of maintenance/preparation/repairs that you might need if embarking on an enduro-style trip. It was only a day course and, from memory, it covered things like cleaning/changing the air filter, brake pads, taking the wheels off and changing tyres, etc.

All simple enough stuff, but a great confidence booster for folk like us who tend to rely on dealers. As it was only a day course, we backed it up with a course at the local college. However, I have to say that Simon Pavey and his team filled me with a great deal more confidence that they knew what they were talking about than the eccentric tutor at the Isle of Wight College. Armed with what they had taught us, we would have done just as well (or better) with a Haynes manual.

Cool. Checked the site and couldn't find anything about courses. Is this something just recent and has not made it on the website?

I did the Adventure Course and found it really enjoyable in Wales.
