Anyone make locking wheel nuts suitable for the GS?

I had a TRF meeting down the road at Eastleigh last night, and decided to take the GSA.
Blasted from Fareham west along the M3 at not quite legal speeds and then pulled off at the Southampton Airport junction.
The bike was fine all the way along the motorway, but as I pulled on to the off slip the back felt a little twitchy. Was it a flat?
I slowed on the slip and gave a little wiggle on the bars, back end more than a little wobbly, yep deffo a flat.
So I stuck the hazards on and rolled slowly onto the verge.
Then I realised the tyre wasn't flat and the whole wheel was moving.
For a split second I thought I had been struck with the dreaded drive bearing failure, but no, even more scarily all five studs were undone.:eek:
Amazingly none were missing so I phoned the missus and got her to bring out my socket set.
I then got to thinking...
The last two weekends I have done about 900 very fast miles and the last time I had the rear off was months ago.
So either some scrote has been trying to nick my wheels or someone is trying to kill me.:mad:
I checked to see if the holes had been elongated but they seemed OK so once I had done the rear back up I checked the front and sure enough the pinch bolt and one of the calliper bolts were not even finger tight. So looks like some little ****er was having the wheels away and got spooked.
As I had it out to wash it yesterday I left it by my front door to save me pissing around with fence panels and small sheds locking it up, as I was taking it out today anyhow.
Funnily enough its locked away tonight.

So, to avoid the possibility happening again, anyone know the answer to the thread title? :nenau

I almost laughed when I saw the title, but having read your posting... f*ck! that's crazy

seems hard to believe that you'd have all five loose and the front one not finger tight, but you never know

good to hear you caught it in time - I guess traveling at speed you've managed to just keep everything in line and happy. I know I had a blow out in a rear of a 1100GS I test rode once and didnt know a thing until I'd slowed for an exit - the speed must have kept the tyre up and effective.
 
Did the person changing your tyre use copper grease/anti-slip? I remember a post on here about the woes of using it, as it effectively means you over torque the bolts.

Yes that's right. In the 2000+ miles since my last tyre change the wheel nuts and pinch bolt decided to leave it till yesterday 15 miles out from my house to come undone in unison, rather than whilst hooning around the Oxon, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, and Surrey countryside for the past couple of months. Bound to be down to copperslip and not some scrote ******* with my bike.:rolleyes:

I had a locking wheel nut on my VTEC rear wheel. If i remember correctly it was a ford type.

Looks like you were lucky to have not come out and found your bike without its wheels. You'd have probably got them back off ebay though next week.

Thanks guys. I guess I should be happy I didn't slide down Interstate 91. But at the moment, I definitely can't afford parts (they sound expensive), and that makes me pretty sad.

But why did it takes months for my slippery bolts to come loose? I just used the tiniest dab of the appropriate anti-seize, I didn't use any old silly grease. And it had to be sudden, surely I would have noticed something before? Any insight on that?

It's probably a cascading failure... one bolt works it's way loose, which allows a certain harmonic in the hub and starts loosening another. Takes a while sometimes, and heating/cooling cycles have a definite effect.

In fasteners, there are few set rules. What I didn't say in my other reply is that the same bolt used in two different applications (car wheel vs. bike wheel) will have different torque specs for their specific use. They may or may not additionally specify wet or dry... in this case it's always DRY.

If someone was trying to nick the wheel then they'd have taken the bolts out completely, one at a time so if disturbed there'd be at least one missing :thumb2

Anyhow in the end you're alive and if locking bolts work for you then that's all that matters.

It's like car wheel nuts, one or two loose you don't even notice, its only when the last one loosens do you start to feel the wheel being loose.

Still he does live in the south, lots of scrotes down there:D

Perhaps the same muppet that might have greased the rear wheel bolts, also fitted the front pinch bolt with equal expertise:D

Talking of muppets, the first time I put the wheel nuts back on my GS I Loctite'd them (don't ask) :blast

I actually twisted and snapped a Torx bit trying to undo them the next time the wheel came out :eek:

Actually, thinking about it, Muppet doesn't even come close :mmmm

Yes but in fairmess there was no fooking way that them nuts were going to fall off :augie
 
No copperslip ! A whacking great XXXnm of torque is required putting these on - its most unlikely to have been some toe-rag, much more likely to be incorrect fastening of the bolts in the first place.

As for the front picnh bolts.......co-incidence, or the same problem.

Had the pinch bolts come loose on mine before.....shortly after a service mind. SLM also put coppaslip on my rear bolts when they changed the wheel out - which is not in accordance with the service manual.

In your not very well educated opinion maybe.
Very experienced tyre fitter not in the habit of not tightening up bolts.
Very experienced and not very trusting owner who regardless of who has fitted the tyre double checks everything once home.
Not everyone is the monkey you idiots take them for.:rolleyes:
 
Whatever the cause - glad you noticed before something very nasty happened! :eek:
