Anyone owned/ridden a GL1000?

I bow to your superb knowledge or memory:thumb2
And as for the Avenger my pal bought one and cost a pile

I spotted this GL1000 today at the Ross on Wye autojumble

A UK bike and whilst not original a decent price at £2500 ono

Has had the cambelts recently replaced and a new fuel pump fitted (£200) the owner (Jason) told me the carbs needs sorting as in synchronising etc

When you consider that this will be cheap classic insurance and come RFL & MOT free it looks like a bit of a bargain for someone willing to spend a little time & money taking it to the next level :thumby:

I have had this 76 American import in my garage for 4 years. I fitted new belts and started it, but the carbs leaked everywhere, so I took the carbs in my luggage to the States and had them restored by a specialists as they seem to know the bikes better over there.
Got the carbs home and bolted them back on the bike and not touched the bike since. The brake callipers need rebuilding and I have the kits for this. 32k, I have registered it on UK plates.
I am up to my neck in a big project at the moment so if anyone is interested I would let it go for £3250

Does it run now ?

No its not running, but as it would only take a morning I would put it back together and get it running for any potential buyer.

Maybe a little late in my reply? I owned a 1st year GL1000 for a while a good few years ago. It was as stated a heavy lump but handled pretty well for something made in the mid 70s I later got a CB1100RS and it reminded me of the GL in a number of areas , weight, handling etc. Mine had a coupe of issues some I never fully resolved. The Carbs had been modded in line with an old US GL forum recommendation but all that did was make it soot its plugs at idle, The voltage regulator (for the clocks?) failed so I made my own think I got the cct off the US GL forum or I made my own? (too long ago to remember). Ignition was points set up and a royal PITA to get right due to wear and tear probably. The frame has a brace underneath which rots which makes it collapse on to the tyres when you put it on the centerstand, and my rear brake caliper spat it seals which was a bit of a PITA to swap when the center stand had dropped it onto the tyres. Overall it probably stood head and shoulders above most stuff of its era and could pick up its skirts and canter at a canny pace when asked. & last but not least the gearbox on mine jammed in 3rd/4th? gear for a while which I managed to get free after some road side cursing and then I sold it, think the box and the internal drive chain was running a little looser than the tolerances it was delivered with.
