Planning next years trip around spain, through the picos and a route through the mountains looks good, but map info differs from Mapsource. Google looks good most of the way, with road going down to a singe track suitable for 4x4's. Part of it does go to what looks like a path, but cant be sure if its the correct photo. Maps differ, but some have it down to a path also. So best thing is to ask if anyones done it.

Comming from Santander heading east into the Picos on the AS114 to Cabrales, turn south on the AS-264 and then east on the Ca-1 to vallleyu, where Mapsource says the SU 2424 starts as a road then unpaved road. The road goes to Espinema and the Ca 185 takes you to Cosgaya. From there you can go SW to eventually join the N621. Google has part of the connecting road as CA-893. Tracks begin about N43 13 46.8 W4 45 14.4

Anyone done it? any advice please.

Thanks

Bill

Thought we did this one but alas just checked my tracklog and we only went as far as Camarmena. That bit of track only looks like it's half a mile, why don't you go there and walk it... I say walk it as we took a couple of 'wrong turns' in the picos which took us up exceedingly technical tracks considering we were fully loaded, and had to turn back. But it may be ok... might depend on what time of year you are going too... alot of tracks get washed out.

I've done it about 10 years ago and had another look in 2008, but was on the RT

I know Timolgra has done it

Should be ok for a GS, although I did it on an enduro bike 10-15 years ago

Best to check locally as the legal situation changes, what you could ride 10 years ago, you can't ride now..................its a situation peculiar to the Picos and Covadonga areas

Thanks,

I googled it on a bigger screen and it does look like a 4x4 track, gravel/rock. I think the walking trail photo is a photo of a parrallel trail. iIwll take your comments into account, but it would be a pain if dropped down to the start of the track and had to turn back,--its a long detour. I couldnt see a local not doing it, but whether that hospitallity extends to tourists on bikes is another matter. If no onelse gives a recent experience I might PM Timolgra. Thanks again, I appreciate yout time.

Picos

Hi, I rode this route in September 2009 whilst on route to riding Portugal north to south off road. The route was stoney but easy to do by bike. It is a 4 x 4 road with a few walkers, to the southern end it have been concreted and was about 5 miles long. I have all the gps co-ordinates/maps for this and off road through Portugal if you need them.
Go ride it and enjoy. :hide
