Anyone splashed out on the 17" RT wheels then?

I spotted the 12GS in supermoto magazine with the RT 17" front & wider , 180 section tyre, rear wheel & wondered if anyone has got that set up? It was mentioned on here a couple of months back but I don`t recall seeing any threads about it so far.
£1200 ish for wheels & tyres, just a bit cheaper than a new bike if you`re fancying a change :D
 
Just go the whole hog, Lee and get yourself an HP2 with the supermoto wheels..... :D
 
ST wheels for GS

Just got my ST wheels this morning from that nice chap Alan in hursts,,,,,,,,,weres me hanger muppet hehe.
There going off to be painted satin black and then some Bridgestone BT014 tyres on them, so will post a pic or 3 when i get them fitted.
The carbon stuff on Pidcocks bike is nice but pricey, and it wont make it go any faster but id like some of it anyways, will have to save up some dosh again.

Trial fit and yes i know theres no tyres,the back looks a lot wider and lots of clearance with the akrapovic can.

Far too much money for one of those IMO!

Do the GS discs & anti lock discs fit onto the RT wheels?
I`d like to have a go on one with the 17" wheels but that would probably mean buying some soon after :clap :D

Yes disces fit ok plus abs rings also love a HP2 but lots of money as you say.
This isnt to everyones tastes, but ilike the idea of two bikes and the wheels will let me have both.
changed in about 45 mins i would say.

Great! Post some pics when you get the tyres on & sorted :thumb Are you leaving the front mudguard on with the 17" front? Is there a "smaller" front guard to fit the 17" wheel? Will you even fit the old wheels after riding with these? ;) :D
 
A few things to be aware of when fitting RT wheels to a 12GS:

On mine the front cast disk brake supports hit the calipers on the right side and came way too close on the left side. I ended up grinding off about 1mm from the caliper in order to get sufficient clearance. I've also heard of instances where they didn't hit. Probably the difference in tolerance in the wheels or calipers. Best to check it out.

The rear wheel has quite a bit of offset to the left which causes the bike to pull pretty strongly to the right if you take your hands off of the bars. I ended up machining .150" off of the wheel hub and also .150" off of the rear drive hub to compensate. I started with 14mm offset and ended up with about 6mm. Its pretty reasonable now. If I take my hands off of the bars it just slightly pulls to the right which can be compensated by leaning slightly to the left.

The stock can will not fit. Its too fat.

Handling is improved and its a bit lower as well.

... Glad I learned that before investigating this any further ... front and rear rubber running different tracks ... sounds like a recipe for something unpleasant and it's not McDonalds.

Well before the scare mongering starts give the service manager a ring at Pidcocks and ask him how many miles the supermoto GS1200 they have, has done since it was built. BTW its the Directors bike Steve Pidcock.
Plus take a look around Europe and see how many GS1200 there is with the same wheels.
The carbon people who supply to BMW have also now got a front Carbon guard for a GS with this wheel conversion so i guess its getting popular.

No i am changing the front guard to a carbon one, esp for 17" wheels.
I like the idea of the two types of wheels so i will wait and see how they both fair out.

My 1200 SM

I did the full conversion with the BMW RT/ST wheels about 5000 miles ago. The bike is great. I have done a track day & also ridden hard around the Pyrenees & Picos. The handling is great. I also recomend Pirelli Scorpion Sync tyres, as fitted to the KTM SM & Multistrada.

For your info. PVM make a 17" rear wheel with no offset.

Just to clarify, the amount of offset you get with the RT rear wheel isn't noticeable as long as you keep your hands on the bars. I doubt if anyone would notice it unless they were looking for it or made a habit of riding no-hands. I'm a bit finicky so I notice things like that. The problem with the disc supports hitting the calipers is real and if your particular combination of parts does it you will have to deal with it. The entire grinding job was done while sitting on the ground in front of the bike so as not to have to remove the calipers. It took less than an hour to do both units and after a spot of flat black paint you'd never know it was touched. Not a biggie.

One thing no one has mentioned and I think is important is how great the bike looks from the rear. I removed the splash guard and that big 180 Avon looks downright nasty :clap The bike feels much lighter and the turn in is quicker without having lost any perceptible straight line stability. Where I could get it to chatter and slide before while running stock with an 020, the bike is now dead stable. I've got an '07 coming next week and these RT wheels will be the first things going on :thumb
 
Pics of clearance & where to look out for it would be useful.

I`m finding this very interesting but doubt I`ll be spending £1200 on wheels & tyres as I`ve just had my pay halved :( I`ll have to send Mrs Big Lee back to work :D or sell my car & downsize a bit :D Donations would be gratefully received :thumb :D

I missed the write up in Supermoto mag, briefly, what did it say ?
Where there any negatives ?............or plusses??

No none at all it simply was a good all round report, it did sharpen up the steering and held the line well.
A real good wheelie shot and different pics some with the foot out whch i think looks stupid but each to there own. Its got heaps of carbon on it including the side sharks heads.
Just got my wheels painted yesterday tyres on today so looking foward to that.
