Dunno about the ripoff UK (had some difficulties with fellows trying to transfer money from UK to me - around £20 fee it was for the UK mate :eek), but elsewhere in the inland- aka financially civilized Europe the between EU-countries IBAN spec transfer costs very little. Max few euros transfer fee usually, i.e. for estonian citizens it's 1.30£ fee per transfer no matter how big the amount is you're transferring. I do it via my internet bank, dead easy procedure:

You need his:

-Full name and address (at least city, country)
-His IBAN bank account number
-His bank name and bank address (country and city at least)
-His bank's SWIFT code

Yer done. Takes up to 5 work days to reach his account. So be patient.

Just do it by bank transfer using IBAN and Swift numbers ...Will cost you about 4 quid ....
I bank with Lloyds Bank and seem to remember it cost nearer £12, but don't quote me. I won some Zega Pannier bags on E-bay from a chap in Germany. He didn't want to use Paypal, so ended up sending the money by bank transfer. I was still very happy with what I bought, but the extra cost did take the shine off the deal a bit. :(

I use cash sent by International Signed For
you get £32 insurance free or can get upto £500 compensation :)

Having been stung by lloyds + the other sides Agents

I'd do that as well, for €70. I've done it before with no problems, just try and make the envelope and its contents as boring as possible.

Moving money

I've recently bought a few things from Germany, one was a sack barrow that weighed 28Kg and cost £9.00 to deliver to my door here in the UK. To transfer £40.00 to an account in Germany, the fecking bank robbers wanted £12.00. :spitfire :spitfire When I asked them to explain the outrageous cost, they said it related to the effort involved. (a few keystrokes ) I sent cash through the post, and said keep the change. I would rather give money to the German supplier than be robbed by my bank. Is this is what is meant by a service economy :spitfire :spitfire :spitfire

It seems that to transfer money from one German bank account to another is so cheap that no one bothers with PayPal.

Do not use the Bank Transfer !!! The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Tried to send £35.00 to a German ebay company and Lloyds eventually wanted £20.00 for the privlage. Had to supply all the details in the world Swift eban etc to the cashier who said it was a £10.00 charge. Two days later they rang ne up and said that they needed the address of the Bank also as without it the charge doubled. As it was the Volks Bank Berlin I flippantly asked why they didnt look it up on the internet as being Gemanys leading Bank it may have an entry on there. This was beyond the comprehension of the person on the other end of the phone and I told them to cancel the transfer.
Next day armed with an addressed envelope I went to the Post Office Currency exchange counter, withdrew the euro equivalent for free stuffed it in the envelope and paid £1.35 for an international signed for stamp. The lady behind the counter said most people dont bother with signed for and dont have any problems. It seems that the Post Office can do what the Banks cant, as the Banks have there noses well and firmly in the trough. After all what does it really cost. I can pay my Gas Bill online and the company that owns British Gas is French. Pay pal can pay in any currency instantly, albeit charging a fee to the seller. About time Banks got into the 21st Century and did it for a nominal fee like in Europe.

Use the Post Office. Keep them open !!

Happy New Year to all you Tossers

Hi Mark,

I have a German bank account. If still needed just pm me the details, I will then transfer the Euros and you can send me a cheque in Pounds.

Happy New Year, btw. :)

Question please - Who deals with 'International Signed For' and where can I apply for details ? Thanks.
Just pay for it over the counter at any Post Office. Cracking idea about posting Euros by International Signed For - wish I'd heard about it before asking Lloyds Bank to transfer my money. According to the Post Office leaflet, the charge is £3.50 on top of the normal cost of the postage (eg the postage on a 40g letter to Europe is £0.64 & the charge for International Signed For is £3.50). I suppose its just the International equivalent of Recorded Delivery.

For an extra £1.50 you can get insurance for up to £500. All prices from the current free Royal Mail leaflet "Pricing made easy". :thumb

Thanks Taff - I had the same run around as SilverBobGS with Lloyds TSB and gave up on an item in Germany as the extra costs from the UK Bank meant that I was paying more in Bank charges than the item itself:nenau .
Know better now.

Happy new Year to all.
