Right, not sure if this should be posted here or in the equipment and toys section but here goes. I'm thinking of getting one of the new Apple iphones and was wondering if any fellow tossers have had any experience with them. I've heard a lot of good things about them but i've also heard a lot negative things about them..

Any offers....:nenau

Haven't found anything absolutely brilliant about them apart from web browsing, and readable voicemail but the negatives are as follows (when compared to a Windows Mobile device):

No spare battery possible. (and hence battery failure means sending phone back)

Only stores photos, not PDFs, Worddocs etc

Integration with Outlook contacts - it can take ages to get all the contacts to list correctly.

Not had it long, however - so will see in 18 months if it is renewed or replaced

Marketing hype, and when you open the big box (BBSB), a my windows mobile or palm are better. If you want an iPhone, wait for a generation or two (about 6 months).

I got an iPod Touch and hacked it so that I can have the mobile mail, amendable address book and contacts and the various other iPhone apps without the phone. £269 rather than £1k with the contract and I've still got my Voda mobile.

The Touch is a great bit of kit, talks to the Mac (as it should :D) and means I don't need to lug my diary and address book about with me.

Just brought the iPod Touch for my son... what will he need to do to load up DVD's?

We'll be away for christmas when he gets it... we'll be away for christmas but he'll have his laptop so he'll be able to download DVD's just need to know how

Thanks

It's very expensive .. the interface is great fun to play with but you'd be pissed off trying to text people, or use the phone.
The PDA bits are great fun.

I am going to wait for version 2 that is rumoured to be out in March 08 ... hopefully it will have 3G on that one.

I'm actually trying to buy one for my wife for Christmas. But O2 seem particularly reluctant to sell me one as I'm not one of their account holders. If I purchase then they say it has to be activated within 7 days; which in my well ordered world leaves it a bit tight for Christmas.
Perhaps I've misunderstood the sales patter, would I really have to plug it in and activate within 7 days, or can I just leave it sat happily untouched in its box till Christmas day.

Think that's a load of bollox you're being told there.

Waft a credit card in front of them and they'll have your hand off!

7 days to register? I don't feckin' think so.

I got one to replace my Xda and phone, but time will tell if it was a wise move.

Al

Fella on another forum I frequent has dropped his and has had no joy phoning India to get it repaired. It seems they haven't planned for such an eventuality. Get her an ipod touch and a 12 quid T-mobile sagem from Asda on PAYG.:augie

Got mine a couple of days ago and it is fantastic! I've never had a phone that works so seamlessly with my Mac or made checking email, surfing the web and changing appointments and contacts sooooo easy. I'm pretty sure this is nothing new for you PC boys and girls but for us Mac only people its brilliant.

Its fairly slow when out of wi-fi range but it still works and you don't pay for any data so who cares.

Google maps is ace, and with a tvtv account I can programme my Mac to record any freeview programme I want from anywhere in the world....and then load it on to the ipod to watch later.

The 8GB allows more storage than I expected aswell. I have a 60GB video ipod anyway but to be honest i may sell it on now as I can have plenty of selection on the phone. that may change as I start loading it up with video but I'll wait and see.

So, yep - I think its ace. Certainly a step up from my k800i. The only downside is the rubbish camera- 2mpx is shocking - and no video camera either. But then again with compact cameras being so compact these days (so I usually have one with me) and all phone cameras being average at best, I hardly have the need for a camera on the phone anyway.

Yeah it £270 but is sub-zero cool and the tariffs are reasonable - especially when you consider data is unlimited.

Very cool, very Apple, don't believe the anti-hype :nenau

bad bits.
you can't "send a business card" (you have to "write" the contacts name and number in a text message then send it.....)

you can't send a text message to multiple people (have to write out the same message and send it to each person individually).

i have to charge it daily - but i do have wi-fi enabled continuously and i use it as an "ipod" for 60-90 minutes or so a day.

i have to have the volume turned "one click" down or the sound quality is unacceptable during a phone call.

i don't use the camera- i have a compact - but the camera pn iphone is shite.

if you plug the phone into mains to charge it - it turns itself on and unlocks itself (even though you have a 4 digit security code - the phone will turn on and bypass the code, meaning if someone wants to use your phone all they have to do is "plug it in", even if you have a security code.

good bits.
web browser is brilliant.

syncing data with apple computer is easy to set up / seemless.

writing an email / text message is fine - it's easily as quick as on a "normal" phone - - you just have to learn to trust the spell checking thingy -it's kind of like predictive texting but better - if you miss-spell a word it guesses what you were trying to type and corrects it for you - once you learn to go with it (ie. not delete the word you are typing halfway through - even though you know you have miss-spelt it) it's really quick.....

it saves me maybe an hour a day! (a lot of my business relies on communication via email. i work on site alot...... with the iphone i can respond to emails as i get them / there and then rather than waiting till when i get home that night. i can write a hundred word email easily / quickly on the iphone (see comment directly above) - something i could not do on a conventional phone.

the big screen means viewing documents in emails is easy. the phone can open .pdf word and excel stuff (and a whole load more) without any additional software.

8gb storage is ample. i have a thousand odd pictures and 500 odd tracks and i have not dented the memory.

-

in summary.
if you sit at a computer / in an office for the bulk of the day then you don't need an iphone - you need a phone!

if you are not sat in front of a computer regularly and rely on email for work the iphone is perfect - you can keep on top of email correspondance as it arrives and surf the web just as you would on your computer.

i would describe the iphone as more computer than phone - despite the bad points listed above i, wait for it, would have happily paid double for the iphone - thats how good it is for me - - but it saves me at the very least an hour a day being able to keep ontop of my emails......

:thumb

I heard it won't send picture messages, MMS? If true then not really an option for me.

Can only send pictures as an email they wont send or receive anything by bluetooth cant recieve ring tone /video(no porn:() or pictures from other phones

does have limitations but as I am constantly away from home it is proving quite useful:D

Touchescreen is proving to be a bit of a pain in the arse it switches the speaker /off in a call and puts them on hold etc

Got mine in a case which makes it quite bulky but it needs protecting certainly in my working enviroment .

Genrally I would have to say I like it

if you come over to collect the splash plate you can show me how mine works;)

there is a new iphone software update - just sync your phone as normal and it will give you the option to update.

you can now send texts to multiple recipients (you couldn't before, stated in prior post)

there is some kind of line of sight thing that triangulates your position via mobile phone masts (but i haven't tried it yet) - bit like a gps but not as good....will give it a go tomorrow

few other updates -
:mmmm

not activated in the uk i believe :(

the gps (thats not really gps) does work

the gps thingy does work in the UK … and apparently it is surprisingly accurate considering it’s just getting the info from Edge radio. (i am in dubai and have not tried it myself in uk - but my mate says it all works fine / well).

The iTunes movie rentals haven’t been activated in the UK and ringtone downloads still haven’t either......

i just checked. it seems iphone can use the cellphone transmitters to get a fix in the uk, but the more accurate skyhook coverage is not complete here yet.
