Here's a strange one.

I went to reply to a recent email last night on the macbook laptop and couldn't find the email.
It was missing,
And then I found said email on the iPad.
The main machine is the macbook. The iPad is used for basic email and for google searches.
Email replies are always from the macbook.
iPad also gets taken away on holiday, if you have a good memory you might remember them.

Further investigation reveals I'm missing something like 600 emails from the macbook.
I know it's around that number as I remember noticing my inbox had a little over 4,100 emails and thought I'd best
get on and purge a few sometime soon.
My inbox now shows around 3,500 emails.
I don't know if they are all present on the iPad but certainly at least a few are and my guess is they will all be there.
Haven’t checked other email files like sent and any saved just yet.

My contact list now has no contacts on the macbook although hopefully I can restore them from time machine.
Contact list is still present and correct on the iPad.

For the last few days I've been getting a "log on with your apple id. to get your itunes" type message when I first powered the macbook and the iPad on. Yesterday afternoon I logged on to apple, although I don't use itunes, and that message seems to have disappeared.
I cannot see the connection between the missing emails and the message but mention it just in case.

Any hints, tips, ideas very welcome.
Thanks very much.

I have absolutely no IT skills to help you with here but when I last had an email issue on my ipad it was somehow linked to my icloud.

And Monsieur thank you.
I'm wondering if my logon to Apple has changed my icloud settings.
I'm investigating now.
I shall report back.

Is it date-related?

The iPad has a setting that controls how far back it downloads emails. It's in settings; mail; accounts; mail days to sync.

You set it separately for each email account on the device. You also have to set it separately for each device - so iPhone as well a iPad. MacBook has no limit...

Thanks Richard,
Don't believe it is date related but email account related.
I've been talking with Apple and it seems my icloud email address has stopped working and that would account for the 600 missing emails.
I also have a btinternet email account which still works.
Don't yet know why my contacts have disappeared but will be linked to this cloud account.
I've got to wait for another verification code from Apple and then we'll carry on and get it sorted.
It has taken a long while, like 3 hours, to get this far but confident it will get sorted.
Thanks for your help.

Mr. Apple has sorted me out now.
System preferences > internet accounts were missing my icloud data.
Put that back and missing emails came back and contacts all re-appeared as well.
Took many hours but all good now.
Thanks for the ideas people.
