Looking at a BMW approved used GS 650, can anyone tell me what exactly approved used means as opposed to just used. Is it just a roadworthyness ( is that a word ) check ? Why do they sell two types, used and approved used ? Is it just that approved used comes with a warranty ?

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

I've bought my last 2 Beemers (K12s and current 1150RT) as Approved used.

This means that aside from the usual check of all usual bike bits (tyres, brakes etc.) the bike has a 12 month BMW warranty. How comprehensive this is I don't know as I've thankfully never had to test it but I've heard of a number of people having had fairly major bits done (Final drive seals for example) using it.

I'm pretty sure it includes an HPI check as well.

A UKGSer BMW employee will doubtless be able to give you more detail however my experience thus far has been positive when buying such bikes.

i bought an approved used (AUB) '04 12GS 7 months ago, have subsequently done 9k miles in that time.

I have also had the following replaced under the warranty:

front engine cover
gearbox seal (including new clutch as old one was contaminated)
left handlebar switch unit

I'm Guessing this lort would have cost me £1500 in all, so I think well worth the extra few £ to get an AUB.

But hen again, maybe nothing goes wrong!!!!!!

'Approved used' is a nice catch phrase the dealers use to say they're happy for you to part with your money on a machine they are prepared to sell to you.

It makes you think you're buying something with a bit more clout than just 'used'. It'll have had the full make over & service and those facts will be banded about to justify that little bit more than the one that's just called 'second hand.'
