Arai says; drop helmet..still OK

US Director of Marketing for Arai has said that if you've dropped your helmet from something like handlebar height the HELMENT IS OK!!! I figure with the litigation/suing shiite that goes on in the states, that if they are willing to say it on TV... I'm willing to beleive it!
Bit of a relief, as I'd been quitely feeling bad about not replacing my Twat-X after it feel off the mirror after only having it for 4 weeks, thinking that it could be banjo'ed..

That's good, as Denise's helmet hit the deck yesterday when her 125 fell over while she removed the disc lock. Her helmet was on the seat at the time.
Mine blew off my seat last year.

I droped my Arai Quantum F a good few years ago....and it concerned me too.

At the time the local 5 Star dealer said that it had to be a 'significant' drop to effect the inner shell.

I seem to remember that Arai at the time offered a free check if you had dropped your helmet, to check it was still sound internally.

It was free of charge....but was only available once (per helmet I would assume)..........not sure if this still applies, but worth asking

A friend has a helmet for demonstration purposes when doing CBT's. It was dropped from waist height and then cut open. There is an air gap of about 2-3mm at the impact point although the expanded foam is about an inch thick. There was no visible damage on the outer shell.

the air gap wouldnt adversely affect the helmet, its the "crumple zone" of the helmet, slowing down your head inside the helmet that allows the helmet to function correctly. 2-3 mm wouldnt worry me

Im more worried about the rest of my body than my head these days. Most modern helmets are excellent, bloody tough, absorb impacts well.

Its like these cheap helmets, people slag them off, but i have a MASSIVE off in one when i was 19 and... beside a proper thumping headache, was fine, despite going headfirst into a kerb.

The fibreglass shell wouldnt deflect enough from a drop at kerb height in order to put any significant dent in the polystyrene inner shell anyways.

If the helmet was properly split, rather than just a paint chip, then i would replace it. The split would be a weak point that might fail in a proper crash.

Apparently you can return any Arai helmet for inspection and they'll certify if it's still fit to wear.

A drop from seat height wouldn't worry me enough to replace my own lid.

BUT

Imagine if you were stupid enough to drop your mates 2 week old Shoei Raid 2 while carrying it outside from your holiday digs in France.................

Cost me the price of a new lid that did! Only fair though.

Thanks for this thread. Learnt a couple of things from it. You can drop the helmet and it should be ok and you can wash the whole helmet not just the removeable bits.

Leno's a good guy btw. And bonkers bout bikes too.

Its when youre head is inside it they you have a problem as your dainty little skull crushes the foam on the inside, to slow down the deceleration of your brain. No head inside, no crushing affect.

Arai helmet check service

Yes, it's true that Arai offers a free helmet check service if you're worried about it after dropping it.

I had an accident in Slovakia (hit by a truck ) and my Tour-X (nearly new) ended up with a couple of chips on it. Sent it back to Arai, and paid the return postage. They confirmed it was OK - including a certificate to say so.

Top service, and a good reason to wear an Arai...

You can also have your Arai serviced foc at the 'race truck' at many events throughout the year.

They have a good look and replace any damaged clips etc.

I had a quantum f for 7 years and got it 'cleaned' at least once a year.

I did ask the last time about it's age and the guy said 'no problem' but you might want to think about replacing it soon - it was 7 years old!
