Ardennes 10 July - 13 July

I have the little slip but I was told by the dealer that you need the full V5C to buy the tax disc. Will give it a go tomorrow.

The dealer is wrong. You need to have the V5 or a V11 reminder to tax the bike ONLINE.

From http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680
"The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for taxing for two months from the date you bought your vehicle"

So, as long as you bought the bike in the last 2 months (of course, you'd never change the hand written date :augie) you can tax the bike at a Post Office.

Off to the Post Office tomorrow which fortunately opens at 8:30am :clap

Roll on Saturday! :JB

Wow...that's a relief young Tom should be joining us after all...must find an Oriental restaurant so he can do his ordering again.

Suggested routes etc.

As promised, here are the suggested routes.

As the files are quite large I have broken them up.

There is fuel on all of the routes. So no great problem with any of the daily distances, unless anyone is gunning it on an SP1.

(A) There and back

(i) Chunnel to the hotel, 224 miles. A chunk of motorway down to Cambrai, followed by N and D roads. We can stop for a sandwich etc. in Montcornet.

(ii) The return journey home. 200 miles, Across country, followed by another chunk of motorway, for the final run across the dull and congested flat lands of Belgium. We can stop on the motorway for a sandwich.

(B) Ride outs

I have done three sets, even though we only have two days spare.

Ride out 1 Hotel out to Clervaux in Luxembourg, in two legs each of 98 miles. This is pretty much the same as the ad-hoc ride I cobbled together on the first UKGSer's Ardennes ride I did last year. I rode it earlier in the year in the wet and it's OK.

Ride out 2 Hotel out to Givet, in two legs, each of 80 miles. Again, it is near enough the same as the route I did for the ride last year. I rode it again earlier this year in the rain and have tidied up some parts, leaving the bit in where I got lost in a small village :blast

Ride out 3 This is an extended version of ride out 2. I cobbled it together from routes I had done in the past, along with a chunk lifted from Michelin's excellent '80 Virees a moto' book. As you will see it takes in many of the roads used in ride out 2. Again, it's in two legs. The first 75 miles, then a longer 184 miles, totalling 259 miles.

If I get a moment I will do the routes up in Excel, too.

====

As usual:

(i) Can we all start with full tanks of fuel when getting onto the train, please.

(ii) If possible, let's meet up at the passenger centre before getting on the train. I will be there about 30 minutes or so before departure. 1200GSA (not too clean). I will PM everyone my mobile number in case of problems.

(iii) In case someone has a problem getting off the train (delays are not unknown) let's rendez-vous at the first petrol station on the left when leaving the train.

(iv) It's a small group but at some point over 200 miles we will all get split up, inevitably. I think it would be a good idea to run the drop-off 'marker' system. Not least it allows everyone to ride at their own speed and still keep the whole group reasonably in touch with one another.

(v) If anyone does not have a GPS, please let me know. It is not a problem.

I am going to be a good boy..........................and only drink half the town dry:jager:beer::ChrisKelly:beerjug:

No, I am going to be sensible. I still have memories of riding from the Black Forest to Austria after a night on the schnapps, I shall never forget the smell of Germanys finest wafting around my lid as I belched my way east around every tight hairpin bend. We were then offered Schnapps on our arrival at the next B&B. oh, how I laughed.

So it will be an early night, hot chocolate and a good book.

Lloyd, no leading me to temptation, I will be firm in my abstinence.

I am afraid I don't have one of those satnav things, desperatley trying to resist, will bring an old fashion map and plot me route (or I just follow you lot, if I can keep up:augie).

David.

Hi Guys,

I have made a request to Richard for a little detour on our way past Cambrai to visit a relative who was killed in WW1. It won't be to far out of our way so please forgive this little indulgence. I will bring some info with me to give you guys some background of what happened there and how my great uncle came to be buried in this particular cemetary.

Thank you.

David.

Crossed threads, now sorted.

As you can see, I have received a request from WorthingWelsh if we could take a small detour, near Cambrai, so we can visit the grave site of one of his relatives who fell in WW1.

I can't see any problem at all; it will mean we can miss out Cambrai, which is good.

I will re jiggle the route down to take in the small village where he and his comrades are buried.

Cheers,

Richard

..

Sounds great and I have no problem and it's very humbling to link today with the past. There are some great WW1 sites near by..

I'd love to "nip" up to Leopoldsburg as a man known to my grandfather is there. He was the last winner of a VC in the European war and it's a great story. Perhaps another day.

Gear & Stuff

What's the form with panniers as I was planning to fill them with stuff.. Just the basics; laptop, couple of outfits, dinner jacket etc.. I'm I right in thinking that you lot will be travelling with boxes on or will you travel light??

I'll be away from home for 8 nights - top box & tankbag is all I'll be using.

.

so are full boxes frowned upon then on these trips? I quite like the extra protection and think they set the bike off.. Not sure i could leave my formal evening wear at home..
