Working together

From nick boxer:

So:

In the interests of working together, what exactly do you want me to complain about and to whom. :nenau

(Hope this doesn't sound too supercillious);)

Wilb, your "personal action plan" is on its way to you in PM

1200GS Reliability

Hello; I'm new here. I have had a 2006 GS for three months now and am just about used to it; so much so that I was just about to advertise my great 1987 K100RS for sale, until yesterday! I had just left for work and the engine stopped - no warning, no mechanical noise; just stopped, with a couple of flashes from one of the red lights. And no I didn't push the side stand down ;-). It started again and I went on my way. But it shouldn't have happened, and I am concerened as to whether all this fancy CAN BUS stuff is reliable or not. It's certainly not resilient; if the main computer thingy develops a fault it will, presumably, just stop, because unlike aircraft computer systems there is no backup. Also unlike my R60/5 I will not just be able to get a couple of tools out and fix it, and it won't care how far I am away from my destination. So I'll hang on to my K bike for a while longer - just in case.

Anyway, whinge over, it is a nice bike and goes well. I will have a few more things to say about how good it is when its raining or on a wet road from a weather protection point of view, but that's for another post.

And as for that ridiculous (and permanently wet) bit of sponge in the front engine compartment which BMW says is perfectly ok but is the cause of that corrosion at the bottom... I just took it out. What sort of good design is that !?!?!

Glitches?

".....unlike aircraft computer systems there is no backup...." and even then it is possible, as we saw a few weeks ago for engine power to fail just before landing. You are being very pessimistic I think and no doubt you will not board an aircraft again until there is a satisfactory explanation?
Your 1200GS stalled just after take off...... well, that can happen on any ICE powered machine until it warms up - but it has become rarer and rarer I agree. I have had my GS almost four years now - and I MAY have had the same fault as you - but I certainly would not have remembered it.
Don't worry - most of us don't know what a CAN-bus wiring system is and will never find out; My computer (a newish Dell) has a few tricks up its sleeve as i am sure yours does! Don't do anything dramatic until it has warmed up - bike or computer!

Anyone who oversells "if the computer fails it will not run" is speaking from fear and not from experience...

Very few (any??) ZFE computers fail... What will get you is if one of the inputs to fails and the computer decides that the bike shouldn't run... this is the same as what happens on an older bike... but simpler... The use of a computer has simplified the wiring diagram (for a given level of functionality) by a great deal...

If you had a non-starter on an older bike... you'd start troubleshooting... usually by changing parts or testing wires...

If you have a failure on a 1200, you could ask the computer what's ailing it (simple to do, there's a tool available)... or troubleshoot as above... your choice...

Don't be afraid of it... learn about it and love it.

FFS Tekky, don`t you ever stop?:augie How I recall those lovely, heady winter days when my Japanese bikes were totally trouble free, didn`t rust or rot at all and gave me years and years of endless reliablity without ever bothering my dealer.......NOT!

David, if you are worried about it, get into your dealer and they will check it out and enjoy riding it....!!

Language

The language pointed towards me is absolutely appalling.
Us BMW riders are supposed to all stick togeher, hold hands, and run barefoot through the meadows.
Isay run because if we rode, only half of us would make it to the other side..:)
