Hello all. New guy here but a rider since 1965. Am about to buy R12GS with ABS. Have read the threads about rear end and ABS brake failure problems. These don't seem to have been sorted by build date. Since I am about to buy the ABS bikes available now have March '05 build dates and later. I know BM makes improvements from time to time since the September start-up. Certainly would appreciate advice about whether to get a March 05 build date, or, wait for one to be built in June 05? Or, is the ABS system so troubled that I should stay away from an ABS '05 alltogether? Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply KTMMark! Between all of us we can help BM see the light and make everything right if it fails. :shoot: Any other March '05 build date experience out there?

I have a March 05 production bike and I also have had no problems ... the later the date the better. In Canada the warranty is for a full three years so I'm not too worried.

Glad to hear the good news KDude! That's why we pay the big bucks for a 3 year warranty. Anyone else out there?;)

Failures aren't too much of a problem, its failures outside the warrenty period that will be the problem. You should therefore buy the newest 1200GS you can afford to maximise the warrenty.

Good to know Ian. Was the only problem the ABS sensor? Is it running as good as before now? Hard to sort out various peoples' problems on the threads and relate them to build date.

GS Monkey, your advice jives with my gut sense. The later the better assuming improvements are being incorporated during the model's production year. Hard to wait another six to eight weeks for a June build but it that turns out to be the wisdom of this board I would have to consider that carefully.

Moto Martin, say it's not true. That 1998-1999 were the best "GS" production (for the R11GS that is). Had a 98 R11GS 7th Anniversary and it ran like a top. Only hoping a new March 05 build R12GS will be as reliable as that one was.

IMHO it would be helpful to build the collective wisdom about R12GS failures if people would clearly mention in their posts about failures specific information. That is, the Model (R12GS ABS or non-ABS), the Production Date (Month and Year) and the Kilometres (or Miles depending) on the clock when the failure occurred. Plus anything observed about the symptoms at the time of the failure and the what was done to fix it and the results of that. I, for one would be willing to do that. What do you guys think about that?:beerjug:

Reading a forum like this tends to concentrate reports of problems and increases your anxiety that you will have trouble. In reality, the incidence of failures is low. Statistically, you can expect a trouble-free run. Relax.

RogerJ,

My bike is 1200GS march 05 ABS and until this week I have not had any problems. The milage is about 4900 when the rear ABS sensor started reporting problems.

Bike is still running fine except that brake failure light flashes ( I believe that this is warning me of no ABS).

Its booked in for the sensor replacement at the end of next week so I will report back when this has been done.

I'm with Stephen... ordered my GS last December and picked it up on Apr 22. I haven't looked at the build date, but I wouldn't delay the enjoyment its giving me.
:D
Central Canada... can you be more specific? We might be neighbours. :beerjug:

Mines Sept 04 and so far not too bad (no choice on ABS) did have corrision problem on front timing chain cover, but that has been sorted and I think BM have cured the problem at source.

Just don't get a Friday bike.

:beerjug:

Safe happy riding

Ianm00, thanks for the update. Will stay tuned about what ws done and if its AOK after.

Bulwinkle, good to hear from you. Not quite as central, am in Toronto but once in the saddle it is a fairly small country.:) Carefully pulling off the little plastic panel on the left side of the bike should show the build date.

ShaunT279, yeah, and especially not get a bike made after lunch on Friday!

Don't get me wrong, I'm by nature the smiling optimist.
