Are they good for over 100k miles?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but keen to know if a 1200 TC, so a 2012 bike, if looked after properly, could comfortably and reliably reach 100k miles?

Compared against other brands BMW are not significantly better or worse. On balance probably more expensive to fix when they do go wrong.

Compared against other BMW's the GS (and your 1200GS TC in particular) is probably a bit better sorted as a result of so many of them being out there. Also lots of spares around when they do go wrong. And helpful advice/sympathy/piss taking on here :comfort

If you do want to do 100000 miles on a bike bmw are probly the best brand. Not because they are the best bike but there is a lot of specialists out there with all the knowledge and back up you could need. JJH

If you expected to do that sort of mileage on one bike ( Id get bored long before that) then your best bet without doubt is a v4 honda

106,000 miles on my 2008 F800GS and still going beautifully. Not even any corrosion. Six years and five winters :P

:beerjug:

Edit for JJH below ... no valve clearance adjustment required in that 106,000 miles, and still bang on halfway between max and min recommended clearances ;)

V tec is very expensive to run at valve check time £500 I have heard also has a greater appetite for fuel. Don't know much about the 1200 except woeful range. Good build quality though. JJH

The in-line 4 cylinder range of Honda engines similar to the ones in the Fireblades also seem to be good for a reliable 100K plus miles.....

Yes they make their money on checking the clearance not adjusting them. I have heard of dealers who charge for same but know how good modern engines are and don't bother. Never heard a name though just vague references. JJH

My current 1200GSA has 104,000 miles, is going as well as ever and will be doing another US tour this year. I reckon mine gets ridden harder than most and I just do do the standard servicing but use the best semi synthetic oil I can get. I reckon a 1200 boxer will be good for 200k without too much bother. Remember that it's a fairly lightly stressed motor.

I fully expect the WC to do the same when I get around to ordering it!!

Really? Pray tell us why you think a V4 Honda is the best?. TBH, most motors will do big mileage if looked after.

I walked away from a VFR exactly because the valve service intervals are (were) so costly. Oh but Sir, they never need adjusting. So my "free" warranty is actually extremely expensive bearing in mind it demands pointless work schedules.
My Yamaha Diversion 900 went for 70k before the valve shims needed doing. Ditto the clutch.
My 08 GSA is now showing 50K and I'm expecting at least the same again. Chassis corrosion levels compete with the Yamaha.

My current pan euro went to 100k last weekend and it's servicing consists of an oil and filters change at 5k if it's lucky, more often 10k by the time I get round to it.
