Next tuesday we leave the norwegian shores for a fortnight in the Alps - can't wait.......:D :D

Question - are the OE sideboxes for the 1200 really waterproof or do they leak ?? Am a little unsure with regards to the extending gizzmo.......:( :( Should we pack in plastic bags ??

The first real test of my 1200:) :D

I rode down to the Pyrenees last w/e on M-ways, in torrential rain and at 3 figure speeds.

Nothing in the panniers (not expanded) got wet but where the rubber seal joins (leading edge of the pannier - why?!) there was a small amount of 'grit' inside the pannier indicating it had leaked very slightly - however, as stated, all the contents were dry so I've no problem with that.

Mine hasn't leaked - but I still pack my stuff in normal plastic bags anyway. Enjoy the trip!! :D:beerjug:

I discovered my panniers weren't waterproof when riding back from France last Monday. Emailed Sharon at Park Lane to let her know, and was given a brand new set this Saturday - excellent service once again from Sharon and her colleagues.

regards,

Bonj

Mine have been in some real down pours and never leaked although the seal doesn't look too good and looks like it doesn't always fit properly. I dfon't use plastic bags etc. as it's always fiddly getting everything in but I've just bought some inner bags from Mane Event which I hope will give a bit of extra waterproofing and save having to carry filthy cases into hotels etc.
Cheers JG
PS Have a good trip.

Me too, where abouts? Do you know if the higher passes are still closed? I think they might be.
Cheers JG

They don't leak in my experience. I still pack in my black waterproof pannier liners aka bin-bags:D

No, I don't know - just have to go back the way you came if you get confronted by the white s*ite......:D

Have a good trip you as well........:beerjug:

I've not had any problem in long spells of heavy rain, with the panniers in the extended position. However, I always take the precaution of packing my clothing in a waterproof inner bag.
I've found that reusable M & S food bags, which are made of a thick woven nylon material, are practical and fit the panniers perfectly. Bin liners are an alternative, but are more likely to tear.
There's definitely not much worse than a long ride in the pissin rain, only to find that all your clothes are wet.

No leaking for me in either expanded or normal mode. I do use the BMW inner bags, which are beautifully made and add another layer of protection against leaks.

i did a wet week in ireland last year. to get the most space i relied on just the seals...... they didn't leak.

agree with above accept i don't use for trips more then a weekend as so much space is lost. once a bag takes walking boots 'thats nearly it'.
