I'm looking to buy a new helmet. I'm too tight to buy a TourX so thought i'd have a look round at an alternative. Been reading up about the Arioh S4, sounds like a good choice. Also, the Spada Sting. Anyone got one? What are they like ?

I have an airoh S4 and love it, nice and light, comfortable, good visibiltiy, I like the visor and peak combo as opposed to peak and goggles etc, can't comment on the Sting as I haven't tried or seen one.

Best to see which fits best.

Isn't this the one that one bloke on here had to return about 10 times because it does work :nenau

Visor fog prevention function never works
Visor never shuts properly and leaks water

Generally overpriced tat :nenau

Well I have an Airoh S4 and love it. It's the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned, I much prefer it to may Tour X. The best thing about it, is the rock solid peak, there's absolutely no noise or vibration from it.

I's not perfect though, you do get a tiny amount of water in at the top of the visor....but it is only a small amount, nothing to really bther about in a torrential downpour. And it's quite drafty, under the chin bar, which is great in summer, and not really a problem in winter as long as you wear a polar buff.

The Spada Sting on the other hand is the same helmet (just re-badged) as the AFX FX-39 or the Fly Trekker available over in the States and has got some good reviews over on Adventure Rider, and Webbikeworld see here:-

And another couple of good product descriptions here at Revzilla :-

I've decided to give the Spada Sting a punt and have ordered one, it looks to be a better helmet than the Airoh S4 and for £90 it's worth taking a a chance on.

I'll give a review when it arrives.

Hope this helps

Best Wishes

Andy

Had a look at the Airoh S4 yesterday, would of bought it at 170€ except I reckon that after an hour I would have a pain in the forehead. Nothing to do with Airoh, just my head. The Xlite and Shoei both seemed to fit me perfectly and sorry to say do seem to be better made, which of course they should be at over twice the price.

Bottom dollar if the Airoh had fitted my head shape I would have given it a try. But I think because I was not quite happy with the way the lining looked in the Xlite I will hold out for a Shoei Hornet in the UK...

Picked up the Spada Sting today. There's not many reviews online of these so I'll post my thoughts when I've used it. It seems well constructed but the finish on some parts isn't great. The visor looks to have been cut quite poorly at the top and has some sharp edges, as do bits of the peak. Might be able to fix it with a bit of gentle sanding. Not great but it is a £90 helmet.

Will report back!

Metropolis, Andy, any updates regarding these helmets?

I had a look at the UVEX and generally liked it but the peak mounting system seemed to be incredibly flimsy - even in the shop it was very wobbly so at 90mph it might be a real handful.

That's only my initial impression though, I'd rather hear from someone who has actually used one.

I'm fairly happy with the Sting but it's not my main helmet, more like in rotation with others.

If it's a warm sunny day I'd use it. The peak does vibrate a bit above 40 or so and catches the wind a bit so it's not amazing for motorways but certainly bearable.

If it's cold I won't use it as you'll get a lot of wind up in the chin area and it fogs quite quickly until you get up to about 40mph.

Just so you know my other main helmet is a Shoei XR1100 which is excellent but can get a bit stuffy in the hot weather so that's when I'd use the Sting.

Where are you in Surrey? I'm often in Farnham if you ever want to check it out in the flesh, not sure anywhere stocks it near you.

Thanks for the offer - I'm in Bagshot so Farnham is pretty close. I've been trying to contact The Motorbike Shop in Farnborough (ex Motorcycle City, ex Infinity etc) to see whether they have them but no answer...! If they do, I'll call in there and have a good look.

Your experiences are interesting and make perfect sense given the volume of the helmet. I would also view it as a second helmet - it might be perfect for those Surrey Green laning days :thumb

Ihave had the Spada, Airoh and Uvex....of the 3 the Uvex is significantly better quality although for me did not fit at it is for long thin heads rather than short fat ones (like mine).

Of the other 2 I would say that the Spada is the better quality lid, quieter and more comfortable for me. I thiought the stap position was more comfortable AND was the only one I could comfortably fit comms into. On the down side the screen fitment is not so good quality but in recent rain did not leak or mist up due to the excellent venting. The venting does lead to a colder head in cool conditions than the Airoh

BUT the most important reason why I would got for the Spada is that I recently had a 40mph off which saw me face plant the tarmac (thought that was it), the chin guard deformed (as it should) took the force and didn't break, the integrity stayed throughout the slide down the road and the motorcycle cop who attended was impressed....I will buy another when back on two wheels.

Don't think they do stock them to be honest. I happened to find a shop I didn't even know about 5 minutes walk from me. That's London for you I guess! Every other place I found seemed to be up north.

I think it'd be ideal for some greenlaning days. At the moment it's mostly used in and around the city but it will get some mud on it before long I promise!

@oldnfat: Glad to hear the Spada stands up well under pressure but sorry to hear you had to find out that way :blast
