Taking swmbo to Lyons in September. A fly/drive job as the missus' pillion days are over. Anyone know of any good places to stay / eat (this is France!) say within a 50 mile ish radius of the city?

Lyon is the gastronomic capital of France and the nation's second city, their Manchester to London if you like :thumb2

You have a choice, in the city itself or outside.

Question: Do you like cities? Some don't.

Question: What do you (or more importantly, her) have in mind?

Question: A weekend? A week? A month?

Tried to reply but your mailbox is full.

Never mind...

Lyon, is a strange place. Part old and part industrial. There is a huge oil refinery, down by large Rhone river that flows past and part through the city.

If possible, stay in the old part of the city.

Possibly one of the most unusual things is the city's Traboules, a series of passages, alleys, tunnels and stairways, wandering all over the old town. You might find a tour quite fun, perhaps?

Other than that, the usual run of churches, museums etc. etc.

You can't go wrong in Lyon. As Wapping said it's the gastronomic capital of France and, if you're into history, culture architecture etc, you won't be disappointed. Again Wapping is spot on, Les Traboules are really worth checking out. They were passages used by silk weavers to transport cloth from one place to another. According to the tour guide who showed us around (years ago) they were handy for resistants in 1940-44 as well.

Places to eat: You have to go to a 'Bouchon'. The classic Lyonnais restaurants.

This page will give you some addresses. My favourite if Cafe Abel but, frankly, you'll be fine in any of them. I STRONGLY suggest you book fairly well in advance as they are very busy, especially at weekends.

Another place that's well worth checking out is Brasserie Georges. A temple to classic French food that's fairly good value. It has the advantage of being open all the time. Particularly useful as in France a lot of places still close on Sundays.

We always stay at the College Hotel. On the Place Saint Paul in 'Le Vieux Lyon' it's easily accessible (1 bus from La Part Dieu station where the airport tram arrives).

Enjoy your visit :ChrisKelly
