Hi everyone,
I wanted to share an issue I’ve been experiencing with my BMW R1300 GS Adventure with ASA. After the first service, I’ve noticed that every now and then, when downshifting, the gear lever becomes very stiff, almost as if it’s stuck.
What’s strange is that it also happens with the engine switched off
It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, the lever doesn’t move smoothly – it feels like something mechanical is blocking it. My guess is that it could be related to the linkage, the selector shaft, or maybe the ASA actuator not releasing properly.
Has anyone else experienced the same issue?

No issues here after 6000 miles. My understanding is the lever is just a switch and is not linked mechanically to the gearbox. Not sure therefore what is making it stiff on downshifts.

Ive only done 400 miles , but no issues either . I understand that the gear lever is just an electrical switch

So I’m not sure if it’s just an electrical switch issue, or maybe something mechanical like the linkage or the ASA actuator.

My 1250 was rubbish and intermittent until I told them to recalibrate at the service. Works like it should now. Nice and smooth.

Mine is the same, it feels like a notch in the mechanism, it just makes you miss a split second while you release the lever and press it again. I tried moving the gear lever on an asa bike at a dealers, just with my hand, I could feel it on that too. The engine wasn't runnjng. It's just off putting when you do a manual down shift and it doesn't go easily sometimes. It's hard to explain and it does usually change first time but just every now & again it sticks.

That's what mine was like. It would usually wait for the worst time to do it, like coming to a bend!

But isn't yours a manual box and not an ASA ?. I've had manual quickshifter GSs but this is different on the ASA as you aren't manually moving the gear selectors but the lever just feels to stick sometimes like it's on a notch in the mechanism to the switch which tells it to change gear.

Yes. I was thinking that you could get yours recalibrated too.

Mine started doing it when I put on lower pegs and adjusted the gear lever. I think it had twisted slightly when tightening the locking nuts. I loosened them both off and re-tightened and it stopped.

Worth a look at the linkage, but do you have ASA ?.

I’m experiencing exactly the same..
Will have a look at the linkage and really look for a solution even though the bike i drivable 🙂

Not if the problem is with ASA ;)
Appreciate that but no doubt you can recalibrate the voltages as detailed in the YT vid. As previously mentioned it’s more likely a SW issue vice mechanical :thumby:

A follow up from my experiences regarding stiff gear level on downshifts.
My conclusion is that I need to be ”quick” on the gear level, otherwise the gear level sometimes gets stiff. So it’s more the technique than anything else.
This is very much normal technique with a conventional quick shifter, but for some reason I have either put initial pressure on the level or been to slow in down shifting.
Now with my new learnings I really like the ASA gearbox 👍
I hope this is ot help to other's..
